Anyone can be racist, no matter what color you are or what your identity is. History matters, but in this case, it doesn't, because racism itself is the discrimination of prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism of an individual, community, or institution of their race or ethnic group. Not implying that our history doesn't matter, but modernly, it goes both ways. - Coming from an African/Native American. It's common sense. There shouldn't be any debates about this because racism does go both ways, regardless of race. I always see debates or lives with headlines such as, "Can black people be racist?" or "Can you be racist to white people?". It doesn't matter where you came from or what your ancestors have been through; discrimination is discrimination.
The only reasoning people say that you can't be racist to white people is because of their history with other races, because they don't have any melanin, or any severe events that include slavery or being treated unfairly, which led to severe situations. You wouldn't want someone to call you a slur they can't reclaim, so don't do that to anyone else. Besides, I know that white people don't care as much to be called whatever by another race. Correct me if I'm wrong. They're aware, and I'm sure they find it harmless. People with melanin take it seriously because we have history, and the majority of slurs came from white people. We attempted to have protests, movements, and so much more for us to stop being hated, slurred, and treated differently because of our skin. Therefore, we have every right to take it seriously.
Overall, what I'm trying to say is that it's good to forgive and have an open mind. Not everyone is racist, and not everyone is a certain stereotype. We are all our own person, even with culture. Not to mention, (throwing ourselves back to kindergarten here!) the way you treat others, they're going to give that same energy back. Don't be a hypocrite when they do. Racism is a never-ending cycle and is one of the symptoms that cause our world to be filled we hate. We all bleed the same blood, and we are all humans.

update 6/4/25: everything that was said here is NOT my beliefs nor do I agree/disagree with it! as said in the comments once, this is a social experiment, and I would really love to see perspectives on this since it's a versatile debate! i just wanted to put this out there in case it got a little too popular :)! tysm for sharing your perspective on this, it helps a lot!

To really even dive into this debate, y'all have to understand that there are two types of racism -- SYSTEMIC racism, and just plain RACISM.
White people are not affected by systemic racism. They don't face lower chances of being chosen for a job, higher chance of getting a harsher sentence for a crime, stuff like that.
White people ARE affected by *racism* in general. The definition of racism is literally prejudice OR discrimination based on skin color. Both of these do happen to white people, just like every other race. We get called slurs. We get harassed because of our skin color. I've personally been hit with pretty much every derogatory term for white people under the sun -- cr@cker, colonizer, snow bunny/monkey/donkey, rice roach, dust cricket, etc. I've also personally been told "my people" are genetically inferior and should be culled from the gene pool. I've also been told (dead ass... I wish I was making this one up) that white people were made in a lab, and that we're all just a failed experiment. As a teen I was told pretty regularly to "get a tan" because my pale skin looked sickly or ugly.
Moreover, we're expected to just ignore it and turn the other cheek, because "you can't be racist to white people". We also constantly get told we have no culture -- uhm, what? LMAO. The statement is absurd in and of itself, because how do you go about defining "white"? White is a color. Many Ukrainians have white skin, does that mean Ukrainian culture doesn't exist? How about Swedish culture? Dutch? Russian? Scandinavian? Hell, even a lot of Latinas can be "white passing", does that mean they don't have culture? How about Africans with albinism? Because their skin is white, does that disqualify them from their culture?
And unfortunately, yes, some people do think that way. I recently saw a beautiful picture of an Indian mother and her little girl in traditional sari. What to me was an ordinary picture of a happy mother and daughter, was apparently not so to the comments -- they were full of (mostly black, I'm sorry to say) people calling the LITTLE GIRL a "culture vulture" and saying they should remove her bindi, because "she's white".
So all that to say, YES, you absolutely can be racist to "white people". My question is, if you have to stop and think about that before you say something, why say it at all?

It's honestly concerning how people forget that someone can be racist to ANY group of ethnicity. White, Mexicans, Africans, Asians, freaking blue people- have people forgotten the meaning of the word? "You can't be racist to white people because-" NO. You're part of the problem, you are the reason why there are people who think it's okay to be racist to white people because of the past. Why are people forgetting that we must be better than those before us? Racism is racism. Racism is discrimination, racism is prejudice, racism is antagonism, racism does not discriminate when it comes to racism. It's sad to see this trend continuing. It doesn't even matter if you are pink, purple, blue, it is racism.
inkliened
The definition of racism is "prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism by an individual, community, or institution against a person or people on the basis of their membership in a particular racial or ethnic group, typically one that is a minority or marginalized."

im lost... not to pick sides but you can't be racist towards white people?
you can be derogatory but not discriminatory to white people..cause they don't have culture. people say cowboys are white culture but its actually mexican culture. people say certain foods but its colonized foods with a different spin to it. every poc has a slur used against them but not white people...like no cracker isnt a slur its name calling..and white "americans" (europeans) didnt make america they ran the native american's off their land and made poc build america (aka slavery). its literally a privilege to white people that they can't be shitted on??im lost on why certain people are so upset as to why you can't be discriminatory to white people?shouldnt that be a good thing that people can't use that against them to cause harm...majority of white people dont have to be scared to walk outside or go somewhere just because of the color of their skin..anyways sorry for the yap or if i repeated anything you said but this is what ive always gathered when people bring this topic up. the closes thing that counts as racism to white people is stereotyping but stereotyping isnt really a thing anymore or well at least compared to the earlier years 1600s-2000s (i could go more in detail about everything i wrote but this is so much typing)
Thank you so much for your comment! I genuinely wanted to see if others either disagreed or agreed with this, and the reasoning behind why they do. This post is just a social experiment, so I apologize if I have offended you or anyone else.
(By the way, I genuinely love your perspective on this. You're completely right!)

oh its okay!! <3 i wasn't offended at all, just confused if anything
im glad that you're trying to spread awareness to things like this! people sweep things under the rug to much just cause they think its a hassle or don't wanna do anything. the world is already so messy...the least we can do as people is try to talk things out instead of ignoring it. ignorance is not bliss!! it just causes more problems and misunderstandings
(also thank youu <33 i tried my best to not spread misinformation or offend anyone either ᵔᴗᵔ )

I had a friend who HATED white people. He told me that white people deserves to get bullied. Which got me confused, because I am half white. Was he okay with…half of me? Did he think that half of me deserves to get bullied? What even IS half of me? And is he being a friend only to my non-white side?
This is why racism doesn’t make any sense. I am NOT defined by my race. Not by my white side or my non-white side. One’s culture may be an important part of who they are as a person, but one’s race cannot define one’s soul. After all, race is a social construct. A label not one is biologically born with.
Eventually I had to dropped him as a friend because his hate and anger towards white people (not racists, white people) scared me.
Let’s say that somewhere in the future racism against minorities will end. However if we as a society accepts hate and anger against white people today, the new target of racism in the future will become the white people. And the cycle will continue.
This is why ANY discrimination against ANY race should be taken seriously. The definition of racism doesn’t matter. The point is, we cannot fight hate with hate. hating white people isn’t gonna solve any issues, it’s just gonna create new ones.

Racism is generally understood as prejudice plus systemic power, meaning it involves discrimination that is reinforced by historical and institutional structures. Some scholars argue that racism against white people, often called "reverse racism", does not function in the same way as racism against marginalized groups because white people have historically held societal dominance in many parts of the world.
However, individual prejudice or discrimination against white people does exist and can take forms such as exclusion, stereotyping, or hostility.
