watched zero day and elephant "back to back" (tcc dni please)

*** tcc do not touch this blog post. i do not condone the events depicted in these films nor the event they're based on. ***

okay well back to back is kind of a lie. i watched zero day first and then watched elephant 2 days later.

but man! i wanted to see both of them separate from any common opinions or internet communities online (cough.) and maaaannnn were both of them super profound. i'm a sucker for found footage and psychological stuff, and i gotta say both of them had some good qualities! of course, both of them are from 2003 and have their flaws, but overall both of them were really thought provoking.

neither of them will be a 1-to-1 look into the psychology behind the real people and incident these two films are based off, but they serve as genuinely interesting "thought experiments"/observations. i feel like seeing and getting to know the fictional stand-ins for the people involved makes the incident affect you more emotionally, especially if you were never alive for the incident itself, and it's important to understand mentally and emotionally what was going on at the time.

either way, i think you should watch both of them if you can handle it! i'm not proofreading this shit, i just want to ramble about how emotional i got after watching these and chugging a monster.

even though i love gus van sant a lot, i think "elephant" suffered bc of the acting. ik he chose none actors out of a stylstic choice but u can reallllyyy tell these kids dont know how 2 act, and it rly weakend the impact 4 me. i love the concept and the camera shots following the victims, it felt hypnotizing almost?? but i always get distracted by the lack of emotions from the actors T-T zero day is one of my all time faves and even tho theyre both meant 2 explore diff aspects i think its alot stronger in covering this... also the kiss in elephant felt kinda random but im still curious why he added it lol

agreed w/ all lol. it's why i prefer zero day over the two, iirc cal and andre were both classmates and had hs acting experience so they knew how to behave authentically on camera. i'm also curious about the kiss, my theory is that it was a heat-of-the-moment (in-story not irl) encounter ("this is our last day on earth, so why not?" type stuff), but if the two of them are meant to parallel eric and dylan this is NOT helping dispel any rumors x_x
