im asking this bc i wanna write my own story and i really wanna know what people like in a villain... a backstory? lack of one? misguided heroism? a lack of morals? an unassuming design? a menacing design? i know it all depends on the type of villain you want, but id like to hear even what everyone's favorite types of villains/pre-existing villlains are!!! i think its all really cool to think abt
what makes a good villain to you guys?

i like villains that are so disillusioned from their goals that they indirectly become evil.
the master from fallout 1 is a good example, he finds humanity to be weak and not applicable for a post-war america, citing too much differences both in genetics but ideology. so by forcefully converting them into mutants he effectively rids humanity of it's differences (as they are all the same) but also make them physically capable of surviving a harsh wasteland.
this doesn't work however, as the mutants he creates are different in both intelligence but even things like skin colour and whatnot are still prevalent, some are yellow, some are green etc.
villains like johan liebert are also good because he is quite literally pure evil. he is very manipulative and overall nature makes him enigmatic, his presence is seen throughout the anime he is in yet he is only actually in a couple of episodes. also nihilism makes a good base for character building in general.
so for me personally, aslong as you have a good base/goal for a villain you are trying to make then you can do whatever aslong as it blends in with that said base.
