“i know you won’t believe me; but the way i, way i see it…”
week eleven is here! today, i’d like to highlight my second favorite song from brand new eyes, playing god. it’s the third song from the album, and to me, it’s always felt like… a second introduction to the album? i’ll get back to that in a moment.
the lyrics basically cover the singer’s feelings towards the judgements and expectations of others, wanting to grow beyond them and call out hypocrisy. backed against a wall, constantly under the words of others, resentment grows. before piling criticism onto them, the singer confronts others to look at themselves.
as for returning to the notion of this song being a second intro, it’s because this song is mostly calmer than careful and ignorance, and i personally think it leads much better into the rest of the album. but at the same time, the album wouldn’t feel the same with careful and ignorance; it feels like something that comes from the middle, it can’t really be an ending or a beginning.
random, but this song’s always felt like autumn to me. something about its mellower sound reminds me of orange leaves and gray skies. maybe it’s just because i’ve stared at the album cover for too long while listening to it.
thanks for reading!
