Before you read anything, please, for god sake, do not be an idiot and harass, bother or otherwise torment anyone mentioned in this rant. Being facetious or in any way cruel and/or bothersome towards others doesn't help anyone on any side of any argument, so be civil and if you anything to say; make it constructive and civil, because that would look LEAGUES better than both that and my mad ramblings.
also, it's not necessary but if you'd like to, watch this and this, both videos inspired this rant.
Now, not to sound or that i want to come off as or like a gate keeper but modern youtubers should steer clear of the retro tech lifestyle(s), their obnoxious goldfish iq challenge style "content" just insulting to me as someone who cares deeply, has an equally, if not greater appreciation and a strange (g)love towards the technology of the 2004-2012 era, as well just the aforementioned era overall to a slightly lesser extent.
I'm well aware that not all videos of the living out [blank] tech for a [blank] variety are like this, hell, i personally saw the better ones (or a better one, technically) before the half-arsed ones and i mean, im no og, i might've been born in november of 2006 but i wasn't really there for a vast, vast majority of this time period and what i love about it, im aware of that and that's not even counting the even larger amount that just wasn't known to me at the time, i just identify (for lack of a better term) with the era of 2004-2012 and hell, im no warden of knowledge, i don't profess to be and i will gladly and openly state that im very much still learning a great deal of all this, mostly for the first time and i would even go as far as to point out that there are also countless things that im learning or even just seeing for first time that most people born very closely to me know like they know the colour of the sky but what you have to understand with where im coming from is that i've spent a great deal of time learning and adapting to the fact that to live out of this era authentically takes a lot and i mean A LOT of compromise, research and meeting yourself halfway with how far you want to go and/or can go, so i am sorry if im being/coming off a little unreasonable here when i see what this guy or anyone like him are doing and find it to be really insulting, especially when he's phoning way it the fuck in for the algorithmic appeal that the equally phony Y2K ""resurgence"" started.. like, HEY GUYS, YA EVER HEARD OF IPODS?!?!?!?!?!??!!? WAAAAAAOWWWWW!!!! ITS LIKE SO OOOOOOOLD OMFG I FEEL SOOOOOOOO OLD GUYS LOLOLOLLLOL REMEMBER MYSPACE?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!??!?!?! WOWIE ZOWIE OMOWIE GUYS (Forgive me Father, for I have sinned)
its factitious and that very nature encompassing close to everything the present age is the very reason why i go to such lengths to basically just bust my ass trying to make what should just be a hobby into a lifestyle, all just to escape that.
Don't ever blend your backwards factitious present with our noble effervescent past. Thank you.
...and i think with that, i've definitely reached the point of sounding like the country boy (or e-ountry boy, if you will) that doesn't want them dog gone citie fuccurs in muh town!
whiiiiich i guess tracks since i am actually a country boy but like, c'mon man!
i will add that i've personally had a head start by already owning old ('old' being pre2013) tech like a Toshiba Regza 32av700a tv, a Panasonic SL-SX418 cd player, a Wii (sorta) + games and accessories for it, a Sony cybershot DSC-W50 camera and two ms pro duos for the camera, not to mention i never stopped using DVDs and CDs, the closest to streaming i've ever got was watching/listening to music and/or music videos on youtube which i've been doning since the first time i EVER saw what a youtube was. hell, i only just started buying individual songs (and 1 movie, lol) on itunes as of last month and that experience has been very much out of water for me.
so, i kind of have attribute of most of this lifestyle already coming to me naturally as what is very much still the norm for me but i understand that there are people that can only go as far as doing it as a one-off challenge, both well done or half-arsed simply because it's just how they work, like, not everyone can live that way, it just ain't one of those things for them (or is? maybe both? i dunno)
hell, even despite that, i don't see myself as 100% pure and perfect either, while i do try whenever and wherever i can to be true to what i would realistically have to work with if i was around within the era of 2004-2012 ('around' as in being born in either 1986 or 1996 instead of 2006)
like, i really doubt i would've had the money to, for example, have a Cannon Vixia HG10, especially when my sony camera actually has video capture functionality (i have a funny story related to that, actually), realistically, it would just be redundant to own a dedicated camcorder when i could just use the digital camera i already have.
another example would be having an RVL-001 Wii, a CECHC02 PS3, a 20GB Pro/Premium Xenon Xbox 360, a NTR-001 DS and a PSP-1000 (all specifically those models) all under the same roof, oh, and a desktop PC (with a modded case, possibly) but these all fall under what i mean by 'meeting yourself halfway', specifically in how far you want to go.
an example of the opposite would be that i own a Samsung C5220 flip phone (yes, i know the 3G and by extension, NextG have been shut down in australia) instead of a more popular retro phone like (a) motorola razr or even an iPhone 4s because the ladder two would be way too expensive for someone like me to own back then. another, all be it, lesser example would that i have an 8GB 4th gen iPod Nano instead of, say, a classic or touch or even just a 16GB nano. I say 'lesser example' because it probably woulda made more sense to get the same iPod my dad used have and get a 4th gen shuffle instead but y'know, i met myself halfway.
in proofreading the last two parts i realised i'm getting dangerously close to hitting my obligatory derailment of the original topic in favour of something else only loosely relevant, so i'll just cut it short here while im ahead and say that i could on till the cows come home about the niddy gritty of the hows, whats, whys and so on of my choices of my old tech/20004-2012 lifestyle/hobby/whatever and then some but this is rant about old tech posers on youtube and probably elsewhere, not a public rendition of my one-sided mad rambling sessions with myself in the shower, so i'll stop here.
speaking of mad ramblings, im sorry if this reads exactly like that, i just had to actualise the rage that these phony challenge videos invoked within me and i felt that doing just that in text form was the best way of going about it.. so um, thanks for reading and have a better one.

As a fellow 2006 born (August 2006) who also lives my life as if it were still the 2000s, I completely agree with you. These people on YouTube are just making stupid clickbait videos as opposed to actually diving deep and taking the time to learn and to understand what life was really like and how people actually lived back then, let alone what our chosen lifestyle actually entails.
Also, on a personal note, my dream cellphone, had 2G and 3G networks not have already been shut down just a few years ago in the US, would've been a T-Mobile Sidekick (seriously, why can't any modern cellphones look so cool and flip out like this one can?). However, I'm alright with the 4G flip phone I've currently owned since June 2023.
just a quick heads up, it's like, just about 11 pm when i typed all this out and i think after being isolated for the previous 2 days up until today might've caught up with me because this just kinda deteriorated into angry mad ramblings about stuff and/or things related to tech.. either that or i really do need to be held by someone or fixed in general, either or, i dunno, im tired mate, awfully tired...

god ikr, that's already one thing but i rly had how "dumb phones" are just android phones that have been lobotomized and will also slow down and die no matter what u do, and are made outta the most gutless stuff ever, so y'know, try not to look at it too hard or else it'll fukn atomize, lol
also, this one more of me thing but i also rly hate how they have stuff like youtube or twitter or spotify, not that i wanna go back to bloody java apps in an age where that'd be a dumb idea ready to blow up in ya face, it just want the old function-first ui of old flip and bar phones over the dull flat shape ui. like, for fuck sake, can i please have a well-built 4g flip phone that exists purely for sole fuckin utility of CALLING and TEXTING, one that slow donw and fuck out after two and half years of practically being a pockect warmer that sometimes gets used to remind my dad to check his PO box, ok? like seriously man. i wouldn't even mind if takes a solid 30 seconds to turn on like my samsung flip, hell, CAN I JUST HAVE A -MAGIC 3G- NEXTG- WHATEVER THE FUCK TELSTRA CALLS 3G TO PHONE TO 4G NETWORK SIM SO I CAN JUST USE THE PHONE I ALREADY HAVE THAT HAS EVERYTHING I WANT IN A PHONE??? IS THAT SO BAD???? I DONT TO LIVE OUTTA MY PHONE! I DONT THE FUVKIN INTERNET TO REPLACE EVERYTHING MOTHERFUCKER!!!
