TLDR: 7/10
I don't have much of a history with this franchise, I've watched plenty of lets plays and theory videos when I was younger for the first 4 games but I don't have any emotional attachment to the franchise.
I genuinely don't know if the pacing was good, but I feel like the first half of the film would be forgettable if it weren't for the fact that it's purpose was to introduce the setting and characters to anyone who isn't a fan. But as someone who is not one, I think it drags out for a bit too long. There are some parts that foreshadows what's to come, but I think it's odd that everything has been dropped right at the middle of the film.
I had my suspicions on Vanessa, but it was then at the middle where I am more intrigued on what her story is. I think introducing the animatronics could have been done a little better? You have the perception that they are bad with those at the beginning, they feel like they are there just to show off how scary they are. The reveal of what really happened felt real quick at the end, I almost forgot what it was all leading up to. The kids could have lasted longer in the spotlight, though within the last 20 minutes we found out who William Afton is and he just dies.
Think this is my first horror movie too, and with knowing some lore, do the killers need to have a motive? At least in the movie, since it's own thing, It was never said why Mr. Afton kill the kids, I guess he's just a very messed up man.
I like the scares, and the animatronics themselves. They're well done. Though the idea of dying in a spring-lock suite, and the original death itself always was a little disturbing to me.
I don't care about Matt Patt, but I'm very glad to see the original Living Tombstone song be there in the credits.
But that's my experience as a non-fan. It was a good film in my opinion, though I don't know what long time fans think of it.
