Weasels Ripped My Flesh - Frank Zappa & The Mothers Of Invention review

Going into this I was honestly expecting something like Chunga's Revenge since both records were released in the same year, but asides from like 5 songs it's definitely not, it's another one of Zappa's batshit insane albums, maybe not as weird as something like Jazz From Hell but still wack. It's technically a compilation album since these are all tracks performed by the original line up for the MOI before they broke up in 1969, which I just found out was sparked by Duke Ellington begging for $10 from his manager at a jazz show. Anyways, I decided to review this record anyways even if it is a compilation since all the songs here are original and didn't appear in any other of his studio albums from before, but needless to say it kinda led to the tracklist being inconsistent since it'll go from hard rock or blues, to avant garde jazz, to straight up noise, sometimes all in the same song. It can be a little hard to digest so I'm glad I relistened to it a bunch, cos otherwise my opinion on it would be completely different. Anyways I like most of the songs here, I know I just called it inconsistent like 2 sentences ago and it absolutely is, but after a while I started to dig most of the songs, there's still some horrid dogshit here and there that I don't think I'll ever enjoy, but even I can find some cool stuff about those songs. Like I never thought I'd say this about a Frank Zappa song of all things but the self titled track sounds a lot like something from the first Silent Hill game, and fyi before anyone says anything, I don't mean the slower more relaxed aesthetic parts of the game, I mean the exact opposite. Also completely forgot to mention this so I'll just put this here, Oh No is petty as fuck but it's really good and a funny song shitting on The Beatles. It's genuinely just a really interesting album to listen to and is super memorable overall, I can definitely see why this is considered one of Zappa's best works, even with the bad songs I'd argue this is really fun to sit down and listen to.
