Sinners was Super Goated

Sinners. I liked it! A LOT!!

I’m gonna be honest. Even as a film major, I’m not the biggest movie watcher. I’m notoriously bad about watching movies alone, choosing to instead wait until someone wants to watch with me. When my little sister (who is a massive cinephile) messaged me, begging me to see sinners if I watch anything this year, I obliged. I went on a date (which was lovely, by the way) to see sinners and, wow. It was incredible. I rarely get compelled to see a movie more than once in cinemas, but Sinners was compelling enough for me to do so. So I saw it a second time.

And it wasn’t until I watched it again the second time that a lot of the nuance of the film stuck with me. Honestly, how beautiful of a film that was. From my perspective, I’m too wrapped up in the film techniques of everything I watch. Oh, that shot went on for too long. Err, that lighting was kind of iffy. Oof, I wouldn’t have cut there. But I really did get lost in the film this time!! The first time, at least. The second watch had me sitting actually paying attention to the film. In one of the first scenes when Annie is explaining how evil seeks out the music that can connect people with their ancestors, there’s a really cool match cut from the vampire’s eyes in the darkness to the sun which I thought was a really cool foreshadow to the ending (of the vampires all burning in the sun). I also didn’t catch a lot of the dialogue the first time, and wow!! That was all written so well. I loved the little talk between Stack and Sammy in the car when Stack was telling Sammy to “lick it like you would an ice cream” which, I’ll be honest, I did not catch the first time. Made the later scene of Sammy and that singer girl whose name I forgot even more impactful.

Mehhhh but… nobody clicked on this for a boring summary of the movie. Honestly, I don’t know why you clicked on this at all. But anyway, what made the film most impactful for me was the company I brought to see the film. The first time I saw it I was on a wonderful date with a girl I really like and for every visceral reaction I had to the film, I’d look over to see her reacting the same way. It was silly in a cute way, and I enjoyed it all the more. The second time I saw the film I saw it with 6 of my friends, 3 of which had seen it before already, and, wow!!! Watching the faces of my friends who had seen it versus those who hadn’t was so funny. The grimace from my friends anticipating the upcoming scenes from those who had seen it was just as entertaining as watching the shock on my friends' faces who hadn’t seen it. I was fighting every urge to express my feelings aloud for the film throughout but, listen, I kept my composure.

It was a lovely film. It's a lovely film to see with good company. I loved Michael B Jordan a LOT! He was absolutely instrumental to this film's success. And, if I’m invited, I’ll absolutely go see it again. Thank you for joining my ramble <3
