Memories can be Magical.
It had to be perfect. Sam was rushing around the store trying to find Gabe’s favorite snacks and candies. It was the last thing on the list. He had already found the steak he would cook for him, the baking supplies, and his favorite drinks. He just needed the other snacks.
Sam continues to stare at the aisle of snacks until he finally finds the bag of lollipops that Gabe loved.
Sam grabs them and checks out. Sam puts everything in the car. And of course, when he’s in a rush to get back home to the apartment that he and Gabe shared, he hits every single red light. Sam has had a huge crush on his roommate and best friend for years now, and he couldn’t take it anymore. So this had to be absolutely perfect.
Gabe’s flight was due to land in a few hours. Gabe had been on a trip to see his brother who lived across the country in South Dakota. Sam and Gabe were living in a small town in south Florida. Their nearest airport was West Palm Beach Airport. So a flight from Sioux Falls to West Palm was about 5 hours. Just 30 minutes ago, Gabe had texted Sam that he had boarded the plane safely and was set to take off soon.
Once Sam got home, he immediately puts everything down. He gets the baking things out and started to make the cookie dough. Sam had always made the best cookies, they were always so soft, but they were nice and crisp on the outside.
Sam finally gets the cookies in the oven and starts to clean up that mess. As Sam cleans, he can’t help but think about how Gabe’s face would light up whenever he would make cookies.
Sam finished cleaning and grabbed the blankets, warm lit fairy lights, fake lanterns, and more fake plants to add to the numerous fake plants in their living room. He hands up fake plants among the others. He drapes the fairy lights across and in between the plants. He finds the hooks in the ceiling from the previous owners of the apartment and hangs the rustic and star lanterns from them, having already put smaller fairy lights in them. Sam tests the remote that would turn the fairy lights on, making sure they work. Finally, he drapes the blanket across the couch.
The oven beeps, telling Sam the cookies are ready. He rushes over and takes the cookies out. As they cool down, Sam started to prepare all the herbs and seasonings for the filet mignon. He puts the mixture on the steak and puts in the oven.
Sam suddenly gets a text. It’s from Gabe. Gabe had just texted him that he was about an hour and a half from landing. Crap. The oven beeps, telling Sam to flip the steak. Sam finished cooking the steak. He puts the steak to cool and dishes the cookies onto a plate. As soon as everything is ready, Sam grabs his keys and drives to pick Gabe up from the airport.
Sam drives about an hour and gets to the airport just as he gets a text from Gabe that he has landed. Sam waits for him at baggage claim. He finds Gabe’s bag and grabs it for him.
That’s when he sees Gabe. He smiles and waves. Gabe walks a bit faster to get to him. Sam immediately brings his crush into a tight embrace.
“I missed you,” Sam smiles into Gabe’s shoulder.
A smile lit up Gabe's face as soon as he saw Sam. He quickly rushed over to him and returned the tight embrace. "I missed you, too." He replied. He took in Sam’s scent, it was comforting and he had missed it while he was gone. He noticed the bags under Sam’s eyes.
"Dude, are you ok? You look exhausted." Gabe says to Sam, obviously worried.
“Yeah, I’m ok. I just haven’t been sleeping that well. I dont usually sleep well when you’re gone, I’m too busy worrying about you” Sam chuckles softly to his crush as he rubs the back of his neck.
Gabe chuckled softly and looked at Sam with a warm gaze. "That's sweet of you, but you gotta take care of yourself too, y'know?" He gently pokes at the bags under Sam's eyes, "You look like you haven't slept in a week."
“Yeah, I’ve only been getting a few hours of sleep a night,” Sam admits shyly with a smile
Gabe's expression changed to a look of concern. "A few hours? Sam, you can't keep doing that. Lack of sleep can mess you up, man. You gotta take better care of yourself." He reached out and ruffled Sam's hair affectionately.
“I know, but let’s get home, I already got your bag. I got you a little something, it’s back at the apartment,” Sam smiles
Gabe raised an eyebrow suspiciously. "You got me something? What is it?"
Gabe was more than curious. And he was touched that Sam had gotten him a gift. Sam was one of the sweetest people he knew and Gabe couldn’t help but fall deeper in love with him.
“Can’t tell you,” Sam smiles as they walk out to the car and start to drive home. The entire drive home, Sam asked about Gabe’s trip to see his brother and if he had fun. Gabe noticed how the closer they got to their apartment, the more nervous Sam got.
Gabe noticed the nervous energy emanating from Sam, and he couldn’t help but become curious. He knew Sam well enough to know when something was up. He had the urge to tease him for it, but decided not to. He didn’t want to push his luck and have Sam clam up.
As the car pulls up to the apartment complex, Gabe turns to look at Sam. “What has you so nervous, big guy?”
“Just nervous for your reaction to the surprise. I really hope you like it” Sam smiles shyly as he turns the car off. Sam rushed over to open his crush’s door and help him out of the car. Sam gets his bags and they start to head inside.
They walk inside, and Gabe smells cookies and steak. As Gabe walks into their apartment further to see the dimly lit living room and cookies and steak on the counter. It was honestly amazing. It was cozy.
Gabe entered the apartment and was absolutely speechless. He took in the cozy atmosphere and the delicious scents of cookies and steak. The dimly lit living room with its fake plants and warm string lights made him feel comfortable and at home. But what really made his heart skip a beat was the fact that his Sam did this all for him.
He turned to look at Sam with a mixture of awe and affection. "This is... incredible. You did this for me?"
“Yeah, I hope you like it. I wanted to make this night special for you, sunshine.” Sam smiles shyly at his crush. Sam hadn’t realized what he had called Gabe.
They go and sit on the couch, and Sam puts on some soft ambient music. As Gabe sits on the couch, Sam follows and lays his head on his crush’s shoulder.
When Sam laid his head on his shoulder, Gabe's heart fluttered. He couldn't help but place his hand gently on the top of Sam's head, his fingers finding their way into his hair. He gently played with the locks as he replied. "I love it, Sammy. You didn't have to do all this for me, but I'm so glad you did."
Gabe couldn't help but notice that his crush had called him sunshine. He couldn't help but smirk as he turned to look at him. "Hey, did you just call me sunshine?"
“I- umm- yeah…I did. Gabe, I have something really important to ask you. I’ve wanted to ask you this for years, but I was too scared for your reaction, but I can take it anymore, I need to ask…..Gabriel, will you do me the honor and allow me to call myself your boyfriend” Sam asks his crush shyly and nervously.
Gabe's heart skipped a beat as he heard Sam's words. He couldn't believe that the man he had been in love with for years was asking to be his boyfriend. It was the moment he had secretly been waiting for, but he had given up that it would ever happen. And now, here he was, looking into those soft and kind eyes, and saying those words.
Gabe didn't even hesitate before responding. "Yes...yes, of course! I'd love to be your boyfriend, Sammy."
Sam breathes a giant sigh of relief.
“Thank you, sunshine.” Sam smiles “I was so scared you would say no, and I would have made it weird” he chuckles softly to his now boyfriend.
Gabe chuckled warmly as he wrapped an arm around Sam. "Why in the world would I ever say no to you, Sammy?"
He leaned in closer to him, his eyes glimmering with affection. "I've been in love with you for years. I've just been too scared to say anything about it. I guess we both were, huh?"
“I guess we’ve been in love with each other this whole time” sam chuckled as he curls up into his boyfriend’s side, resting his head on Gabe’s upper abdomen.
"Yeah, I guess we have," Gabe chuckled softly, his fingers gently running through Sam's soft locks. He felt so content having his best friend, who is now his boyfriend, curled up against him. "You have no idea how long I've wanted to hold you like this ."
“I love you, sunshine,” Sam smiles as he falls asleep in his boyfriend’s arms.
Gabe's heart skipped a beat every time Sam called him sunshine. It was such a soft and sweet nickname, and he loved it. He watched as his boyfriend drifted off to sleep in his arms.
He gently pulled a blanket over them and held him close. "I love you too, Sammy," he whispered, placing a soft kiss on the top of his head. Gabe falls asleep as well.
Sam is standing with the picture in his hand as Gabe comes into the room.
“Hey, honey, whatcha looking at?” Gabe asks Sam
“Oh just our wedding photo. I was thinking about when I asked you out. How I was so nervous. It all worked out, I’m now married to the love of my life” Sam smiles and gives his husband a sweet peck on the lips.
“Daddy, we’re homeee,” Alice exclaims as she runs up to Sam and hugs his leg.
“Hey kiddo, how was your time with dad” Sam smiles down to Alice, who had just turned 6 last month.
“It was great, we went to the zoo and we saw so many cool things, like bugs and snakes, and spiders and prairie dogs” Alice rattles off the things Gabe and her saw at the zoo with a radiant smile.
“That’s amazing, sweet-pea, what was your favorite animal?” Sam asks his daughter
“Oh, easy, the snakes,” Alice smiles
“Did Dad freak out at the bugs?” Sam asks and looks at up at his husband.
Gabe rolled his eyes playfully at Sam's question. "I did not freak out at the bugs. I was just... mildly disturbed." He huffed dramatically.
He crouched down to Alice's level and ruffled her hair playfully. "I'm glad you had a great time at the zoo. And snakes, huh? That's my girl."
Alice just giggles and runs off to play with the dog.
Gabe chuckles as he watches Alice run off to play with their dog. He stands up and wraps his arms around his husband's waist, pulling him close. "She's growing up so fast. It feels like just yesterday she was a little bundle in your arms."
“Yeah, I can’t believe she’s starting 1st grade soon. I’m going to spoil her with all the school supplies she needs and wants,” Sam smiles to his husband
"Oh, I have no doubt you will," Gabe chuckles, "I'll probably have to keep a close eye on you in the school supplies aisle, or she'll end up with an entire store's worth of supplies. And I know you'll let her."
Sam just smiles and gives his husband a quick, sweet kiss.
