The State of Punk Today

The State of Punk Today: Resistance or Disneyland?

Once upon a time, punk meant screaming in the streets. It was the music of saying ā€œfuck offā€ to the system, the order, the bosses, the cops, the TV, and the god of money. When we walked around in ripped pants and vests we stitched ourselves, people would cross the street. Now? I see punk t-shirts at H&M and kids with Sex Pistols bags heading to their 9 AM yoga classes. What the hell happened?

Punk used to be a way of life. We were dirty because we believed in honesty, not hygiene. We were loud because we spoke for the unheard. Now it's trying to be squeezed into three-second clips on social media, sanitized and shrink-wrapped for mass consumption. And the worst part? Some of the people doing it are the same ones calling themselves ā€œpunk.ā€

Capitalism swallows everything—but did we really hand over our identity that easily?

Still, I’m not hopeless. Somewhere out there, in the corners of moldy bars and dim backstreets, kids are still blowing up amps. There are still people flipping the bird to the rules and saying, ā€œNah, I’m not playing your game.ā€ We might not be on magazine covers anymore, but we’re alive. Punk’s not dead—it’s just not for sale.

And let’s be clear: punk isn’t just a genre of music. It’s a stance. It’s resistance. It’s saying, ā€œI don’t give a damn about your sacred cows.ā€ So when someone says ā€œpunk is dead,ā€ don’t spit in their face...

Just crank up the distortion and let the amp do the talking.

All the counterculture subcultures have been generalized under the same term "Alt" so that it's easy for poser to wear simple studded and black clothes for 3 seconds of fame online

Punk has been dead for a while now. Some local scenes still hold up but that's all.

Most "punks" now don't even know what being a punk really means. It may surprise a lot of people but you dont have to follow any particular rules to become a punk. I see a lot of people who want to be punk so bad and they ask others how to be punk. This doesn't make any sense at all because being a punk is literally about being yourself. Punk is anarchy - anarchy is individualism. Anarchists have different views and opinions. Obviously it doesn't mean you can be punk and a nazi because its an obvious oxymoron, I think i don't even have to explain why lol. Punk used to be about being different, now everyone just wants to be the same.

Posers were a problem since punk became a thing *cough* *cough* sex pistols *cough*. I think there is more posers now because punk had become too safe. I don't want to sound like an edgelord or something, Im glad we don't have that much homophobes or some other fuckheads in our scenes anymore. What I mean is a lot of bands are just oldheads now and a lot of the time there is no one to replace them. In result the shows lack energy, moshpits are lame as fuck and punk isn't hardcore anymore, its just some safe space for morons.

I may sound really negative but i don't think its that big of a deal to be honest, we just need more young bands. Joining a punk rock band is a simple solution.

I literally hate how every single thing in the world now, even a subculture that literally bases itself on anti-capitalism and "fuck the rules", is just reduced to mass produced low quality shein garbage that people are going to forget about in a year
