Intersection of nerds and alternative subculture - CONT.

I explained some background information in my previous blog entry on this topic. I talked about how it is shown in media and my own feelings regarding this phenomenon. I feel like this is something that is hard to explain, but also not hard at all? It's obvious that these cultures are intertwined, but it's not talked about a lot.

When I think of this, I often think of all the people I know who go to local Super Smash Bros tournaments and then go to a punk show the next day. Or the person who comes home from the goth club only to play Magic The Gathering with their partner. These two subcultures are so intertwined because they both have been, and most likely always will be, outcasts. They both understand what it is like to ultimately be different from society.

Trends have happened obviously, for a while it was trendy to be "alt" or a "nerd", but a trend is a trend and it eventually fades away. For the people who grew up with one or both of these labels, it's not just a trend for them; it is a part of their identity. I feel as though even if a goth isn't a nerd and a punk isn't a dork, they have a mutual understanding that has lasted as long as both cultures have existed.

That's all I have to say for now about this. I enjoy this topic and will probably have more to say at some point.
