For legal reasons this is all fake, I'm just making up a story.
So charity shops (thrift stores to you in the US) have more donations than they know what to do with. I recently had a good mate let me into the huge warehouse basement under the huge shop he works at sorting donations and their was a mountain of unsorted things (very bad for my enviromental anxiety so I wouldn't recommend going to a place like this is you suffer from that majorly). As someone working there my friend basically gets first dibs of everything coming in and can just donate 20p or smth equally small to get the item. So knowing somone who works/volunteers at a charity shop is definately worth it or getting a job there yourself.
The second thing I learnt on this trip was they have a huge scrap metal skip round the back that we found a bunch of jewelley in and fancu silverware that was being chucked rather than sold. Me and a friend looked up how much one set of knives was and it was around £300. So skip diving is also a way to get free stuff from these sorts of places. Unfortunately they didn't keep clothes bins outside but the scrap metal was enough.
Have fun and don't get caught if you use these tips. I wouldn't recommend using them unless you're really skint since it doesn't feel nice to take from charity.
