the sick lipstick - sting sting sting (2003)
genre: sasscore, sassy screamo
FFO: the blood brothers, racebannon
rating: 10/10

this was the album that introduced me to sasscore just a little while ago, and it remains one of my favorite recent finds in terms of broadening my horizons within the past 5 years or so. if you're not familiar with sasscore it's kind of a rejection of the musical sentiments at the time, around the myspace years, and none of the bands within the genre take themselves too seriously. in terms of movements I would compare it to twee in its relation to punk when that became a thing in the 80's. just move the timeline to the mid 2000s and you're set to head off into bratty territory. a small-brained critic would say that all sasscore is pretty much the same, and they would be partially right as there is a lot of the same instruments and vocals delivered in similar ways, but the best critics of the genre and super fans like myself would notice any modicum of difference between these deliveries and stand up to applaud. for me, the sick lipstick gets a standing ovation and I am  forever looking for music that elicits a similar feeling. I've always loved middle school girl type vocals along with frantic and energetic performances. not sure of the timeline but members of the sick lipstick also participated in bands black cat #13 and fox the boombox. songs I would recommend: thigh master, pretend I'm sleeping, get up catch up (but you need to listen to the whole thing a million times)

artist recommendation: peach kelli pop (2009-present)
genre: twee, lo-fi garage
FFO: dear nora, dolly mixture, vivian girls
rating: 8/10

allie hanlon is the creator of sweet little tunes with a blown out garage atmosphere. she started off small in 2009 with her self-titled album after playing in punk bands such as the white wires, and her project gets its name from a Red Kross song so she definitely has some punk cred. I am a big fan of her music and while she is a hero of mine I can recognize that her heroism is not absolute. obviously her sound is recognizable and often formulaic, derived from classic garage and twee. she even features some of the lilt of nursery rhymes. her sweet vocals sung over infectious punky beats makes peach kelli pop a candy-sweet sensation that's hard to resist. if you come in too eager she might give you a toothache but it's very easy to consume all at once. I can't wait to see what she churns out in the future. songs I would recommend: tough stuff, please come home, hello kitty knife, dreamphone, not your girl

artist recommendation: MX-80 sound

MX-80 sound - hard attack (1977)
genre: post-punk, art punk, noise
FFO: Mission of Burma, chrome, wipers
rating: 9/10

this band was recommended to me by my spacehey friend Maz. shoutout!

I am a huge fan of late 70s noise, and this album is currently swirling between my ears and filling my head with chaos. rocking rolling guitars, jazzy drums sometimes leaning into hardcore territory, and offbeat sentiments that leave you questioning "why?". overall  this band had an experimental and noisy sound that is palatable by today's standards but was weird enough to square up with other acts at the time such as the illustrious james chance and even maybe even DEVO. idk i'm just throwing words out there like limp spaghetti at the wall. songs I would recommed: tidal wave, kid stuff, man on the move, summer 77. I mentioned them as an artist to recommend because their entire catalog is worth checking out if you have the time and enough love in your heart! it's a lot of fun.

pretenders - pretenders (1980)
genre: power pop, pop rock
FFO: 10,000 maniacs, the b-52's
rating: 9/10

at first this album didn't click for me aside from the hits, and then I found a cassette tape of the album at a rummage sale for pennies and decided to investigate further. it is a product of it's time, nestled comfortably between ramones and later heart. it contains that rock and roll sound along with hummable melodies and a strong female lead vocalist that makes pretenders (1980) a powerhouse of power pop. songs I would recommend: tattooed love boys, the wait, kid, I can't control myself (is that really a cover of the troggs? lmfao). there's only one ballad on the album tequila and  that's all I have to say about that.

was gonna include a bonus review but I'll just leave that for next week. I am tired let me rest.

heyyyyyyyyyyyyy thanks for reading, friend of mine! ILY KISS -LIZZY

The Sick Lipstick reminds me of melt banana a bit. Could get down to it on occasion.

Can't think of anything to say about MX-80 but I do like it.

Peach Kelli Pop is my favorite of these. Like this song a lot.

I think I like Pretenders the least of these but it still is not bad imo. Good list.
