Women in Islam: why do people think we're oppressed?!

Women in Islam: why do people think we're oppressed?!

"Women in Islam"

"Oppression towards women in Islam"

"Women abuse in Islam"

In the news, debates, twitter arguments, we often see these kinds of statements repeating over and over again, but is it true? or is it the result of violent, ignorant and basic ideas from people who never really tried understanding the religion?

In every time, place, culture and country there is both good and bad, bad people existing doesn't just erase the existence of good people. But when it comes to religion, it's different, one thing wrong in it, and the whole religion is wrong, and that's understandable, this is not a game, this is belief, faith, and rulings.

The confusion begins when people mix up a "belief" with its "believers", a "belief" is the guideline, the believers are the one who follow it, if these believers do something wrong that isn't stated in the guideline, it can't be blamed for it.

Same goes with religion, when people who claim to be Muslims do something wrong, you can't just assume that the religion itself guided them to act this way, there might be other reasons, other beliefs inside their heads. So when some Muslim people harm, abuse, or oppress women, it's not because Islam said so, it's because there are other influences and thoughts that these people have, outside religion, traditions, generational trauma and bad influenced ideas can lead to toxic mindsets.

Let's take examples for women in Islam:

  • Khadija daughter of Khuwaylid may God be pleased with her, the first wife of prophet Muhammad peace be upon him, was one of the richest businesswomen between all the Arabs, and she didn't even need to travel or sell the goods herself, no, she had people, men, working for her, and how did she even meet prophet Muhammad peace be apon him? They were working together.

  • Aisha daughter of Abu Bakr may God be pleased with her, one of the prophet's wives after Khadija's death, and the second most beloved one to the prophet's heart after her. She was the youngest among his wife, and yet, she was a respected intelligent scholar, she knew religion, medicine, poetry, she had a bright character and she was honest and humorous, the men and women would come to her asking for knowledge, she never had kids, but she took care of orphans and relatives, she was brave and never let anyone belittle women.

  • Nusaiba daughter of Ka'ab May God be pleased with her, a fierce fighter and an expert in medicine, she fought side by side with prophet Muhammad peace be apon him, brave and fearless, she was shouting at the escaping fighters during the battle, a sword in her hand:"What kind of habit is this?! What do you have to do with running away?!". She was known for being patient, when she knew har own son was killed during one of the battles, that's what she said: "I prepared it for such a thing and I have accepted it from God".

These warriors and scholars I just brought up are justa drop of the ocean, there are women after the death of the prophet, during the Islamic golden age, but that'll be too much to wrap up in one blog.

If you made it this far, thank you so much for reading this blog, and remember ,in this age of information, the truth is always within reach, in just a few clicks, you just need to seek it sincerely. I'll welcome any questions in the comments as long as they're polite and aiming to understand, not to argue.
