> the scholars, the new car seat headrest album, came out last friday, may 2nd. i wasn't that excited for it, because i prefer car seat headrest's old albums, but i gave it a try.
> the first song they uploaded was "gethsemane", along with its music video. the song is 10 minutes long and i listened to its entirety, but i didn't like it that much. i felt it was forced and elongated, it's like they did that just for the sake of saying "hey, we have long songs like before". it's not that i don't like long songs, but as i said the length of the song feels forced. i know it's telling a story and it needs time to do it, but i would like it more if it was shorter. maybe if i listen to it more often i would like it. i don't have much to say about the music video, yeah it was weird but that's all.
> then they uploaded "ccf (i'm gonna stay with you)" and "the catastrophe", i liked them more than "gethsemane" but i still didn't have any hopes for the rest of the album. i saw that they were going to host a listening party on bandcamp on may 1st, so i joined and listened to it all. i'm more of listening to full albums so i enjoyed it more that way. and will toledo, andrew katz, ethan ives and cate wurtz were there too.
> i actually liked it a lot, it offers a happier sound (although i'm a sucker for sad songs) and new characters with interesting stories, with "lady gay approximately" being my favorite, as it allegedly is about a trans man. i would like to know more about the other characters, but i couldn't find anything online, and i think the only way to know more about them is reading the songbook, which comes with the vinyl. i obviously didn't buy it, i pirated the whole album.
> the new sounds of this album are cool, i really like how they play a lot with the acoustic guitar, and i really love the biblical references. i got really excited when i heard distorted vocals in "planet desperation". i would say the only complain about this album was "gethsemane" but that's all. i will always prefer the old albums though, i enjoy their lo-fi sound more than his new songs with clean recordings and stuff. i would like him to record an album the same way he recorded "teens of style".
> car seat headrest is actually a very important band for me. it doesn't make me happier, but i identify with his lyrics and they make me feel understood. way more as a young adult, because i will always feel car seat headrest's songs to be targeted at young adults who are in college and stuff, csh doesn't feel like a band for teenagers.
> i actually liked this album more than madlo.
> i envy the people that have gotten to see them live and have merch... i wish i could be them !!!
emil over and out.
