Writings Tips and Advice!

Hai!

If you’ve been writing for a while—or even if you’re just starting out—you’ve probably realized something: writing is really freaken hard. The good news? There are some simple things you can do that might actually make it easier (and more fun imo).

I’ve picked up a bunch of tips over time that have really helped me out. These work for all kinds of writing—stories, essays, blog posts, whatever. Hopefully, you’ll find a few that work for you too.

1. Read Like You Study

Don’t just read stuff—study it. If you love a book or a blog post, take a closer look at how it’s written. How do they start strong? How do they use dialogue or pacing? What makes their voice work? You'll start to notice things that make your writing better.

2. Throw Up First, Make it Pretty Later✨

Trying to make everything perfect as you go will slow you down like crazy. Just get the words out. Let it be messy. You can always go back and fix it later—but you can’t edit a blank page. One time it took almost 2 whole hours for me to read and edit my fic because it was so messy, and now its one of my most popular!

3. Preform for Your Audience!!

Instead of writing “He was angry,” try “He slammed the door and muttered under his breath.” That kind of detail pulls readers in. Your not writing to tell your readers everything, your writing to make them imagine the story. (Unless you totally are trying to just tell them the details, in that case skip this one.)

4. Have a Few Go-To Fixes✎

If something feels off in your writing, check your usual trouble spots. Too many run on sentences? Using a name too many times? Reusing words over and over? Most writers have like 1-2 mistakes they make over and over without meaning to, so find what it is, and when you reread, fix them!

5. Use a Timer and Just Go 🏃‍♀️

Seriously, set a timer for 25 minutes and just write. No checking your phone, no fixing typos, just writing. Even if it sounds like shit when you reread it, you can use it as a sort of guide for what your looking for in that area. I personally like to put on a youtube video and write for the duration.

6. Learn to toss out junk :(

This is a hard one, but sometimes the paragraph you love most is the one that needs to go. If it doesn’t help the piece or move things along, it might (MIGHT) be better off deleted. Tough love, I know, but your readers will thank you!

7. Write about things you love!!

You know that one old piece of advice "Write what you know"? Yeah throw that out, you'll get bored and honestly, you can't really do that if your writing like, fantasy, romance, historical fiction, ect. So I say, write about things you love, You love sharks? Write about sharks! You loveee romances, even unusual ones? Write about it! You like gorey unrealistic slashers? Write it! Seriously, my writing got a million times longer and better what I started writing about things Im hyperfixated on xD
