There's an innate urge to share our experiences and seek connection with other people. That's what social media used to be about. But now it's been flooded with slop and corporate greed and addictive, brain rotting short form content. Addictive, meaningless, and a complete waste of time. I really miss how things used to be back in the old days. Back when there was an end to social media. Back when it wasn't an inexhaustible source of stimulus.
Well that urge to share is still in me. I just want a place for me to state my thoughts. So I thought I might try blogging.
Today I redownloaded TikTok because I wanted to see some edits of Grave Robber from Repo, and before I knew it, 2 hours had gone by in 10 minutes. And I was seeing bugs crawl in the corner of my vision. I had to banish that demon once again.
I've deleted the social media apps off my phone. Hopefully this will reduce my screen time and give me more time to do meaningful things. Like create art, or clean my room, or at the very least, force me to consume longer form content. My attention span needs to be saved.
My eyesight also needs to be saved. Jesus Christ my vision is so blurry even at such close distances, I might as well be a molerat by now.
I need to update my prescription glasses but if I do that, my eyes will appear even tinier than my current glasses make them. Godamnit I need my big beautiful peepers!

This is so well said and realllll.
It's been so hard to step away from other social medias-- honestly. I managed to move away from insta, snapchat, and most of twitter. Tiktok is so hard because of how quickly you get sucked in. I get to see interesting forms of media like outfits, aesthetics, games, edits, that aren't seen much on other platforms. But the short duration is so bad-- because you keep scrolling and scrolling.
Made my spacehey to hopefully still have an online connection and meet more people! I really hope it gets me out of the tiktok doom scrolling too. Get back into art. READ more (god my library keeps growing but I haven't finished a proper book in a while).
It's definitely tough with media and the influence around us, but in the end I feel like individuals feel soooo much better when they step away from social medias like that.
Next step: back to flip phones and pen pals. You got this, love seeing others trying to take life back this way

Dude, your comment made me feel so seen!
You’re absolutely right about tik tok. I’ve seen some of the most creative pieces of work on there. Incredibly talented and skilled individuals share their creations on there and I’m devastated I won’t be able to see them anymore. At least not as easily. But on the other hand, the nature in which we consume on tiktok, it’s like we can barely manage to appreciate it anyways before swiping to the next video. Hopefully we can now spend our newfound time MAKING art instead of just consuming it.
And gosh, I relate to your book problem SO much. Looking at my bookshelf full of books… that I haven’t read… Quite honestly embarrassing. As a kid I used to read SO much. And now look at us…
I was gifted a kindle by my girlfriend recently and that has helped me so much in getting out of my reading slump.
If you’re having trouble starting a book, may I recommend listening to the audiobook first? It’s easy to put it on in the background while you do other things, but sooner or later you’ll get invested in listening, and then listening won’t be enough anymore, and you’ll be forced to read! At least that helped me.
I’m so happy you commented! I feel much more confident in my journey off media now :)
