other factors besides fear and state terrorism, propaganda and social policies include... economic policies and the establishment of a totalitarian stateĀ
in january 1933, president hindenburg appointed adolf hitlerĀ as chancellor of germany. although the largest party, the nazis held only 1/3 of reichstag seats and three cabinet positions. hitler hated the weimar democracy; wanted to establish a totalitarian dictatorship under nazi rule
fear and state terrorism: night of the long knives - purge of 77 sa members, their leaders ernst rohm and other 'enemies of the state' by himm;er's ss - army swore oath of loyalty to hitler. role off the ss/ gestapo and concentration camps in establishing a nazi police state. gestapo secret police, camps like dachau conditions - 16 hours work, little food and water. this is an important reason why they were able to stay in power as most forms of opposition were crushed or had become obedient to hitler, population became largely subdued. people were terrified of being sent to camp and convinced everyone the gestapo were everywhere so they obeyed the regime. this is a less important reason why they were able to stay in power as it was impossible to subdue an entire population; some opposition groups remained e.g. edelweiss pirates
propaganda: influence of joseph goebbels - use of mass media such as cinema (film 'eternal jew') and radio (people's radio) to promote nazi ideology including aryan beleifs/ antisemitism. key events such as annual nuremberg rallies up to 400,000 attending showcased nazi flags, banners and uniforms used to promote nazi image of strength and order. this is an important reason why they were able to stay in power as propaganda particularly affordable radios, made them believe life was better under the nazis and they were not exposed to any criticism of the party. this is a less important reason why they were able to stay in power as not all germans were brainwashed by propaganda, especially the older generation who chose to walk by posters, ignore films and slogans
social policies: nazi influence over education system - changed school curriculum to reflect nazi ideology e.g. maths and physics teachers geared towards military engineering; antisemitism promoted e.g. biology taught that jews were a 'race'. in 1934, all other youth groups were abolished and by 1936, membership of nazi youth organisations rose compulsory. this is an important reason why they were able to stay in power as many young germans were bainwashed by nazi ideology through the school curriculum so they did not questions beliefs and became loyal nazis. the hitler youth was popular amongst poor children who were gaining weekends away, food and clean uniforms. this is a less important reason why they were able to stay in power as not all were taken in by ideology; some joined rival youth groups like the scouts and until 1936 children were attending other youth groups like the scouts until they were banned
