hi how are ya?
les secretaires volantes - thermoplastique (1996)
genre: horror punk, garage punk
FFO: sleater kinney, heavens to betsy, the killer barbies
rating: 9/10
admittedly i have not come across anything in the horror punk vein that strikes my interest as much as this album. it's got super energetic french female/male vocals, crashing percussion, and guitar that swaggers all over the local dive bar, except here everyone's drinking spritzes and champagne. songs I would recommend: je crois que j'ai ma dose, I mean blackout, je suce
model/actriz - dogsbody (2023)
genre: experimental rock, dance punk
FFO: xiu xiu, blue bendy, the faint
rating: 8.5/10
I wanted to review this album when the new one came out (yesterday). I was not familiar with this band's game, and had no idea they offered some of the freshest sounds within their respective genres. the vocals make a big point here and reminded me of the emotive jamie stewart (xiu xiu) with instrumentals that wander into underexplored territory and pretty much carve their own path, while still being hummable and pleasant to observe. songs I would recommend: donkey show, mosquito, maria
model/actriz - pirouette (2025)
genre: experimental rock, dance punk
FFO xiu xiu, blue bendy, the faint
rating: 9/10
I've never met a group of weirdos that make me want to jump around as much as model/actriz, and this album is a perfect display of their offbeat yet danceable music. again, they are wandering through a lush forest, but with a purpose. there are some really intriguing scenes here as well as combinations of instruments. they remain focused throughout the album but the melodies and styles vary enough to keep you listening. songs I would recommend: cinderella, poppy, acid rain
epsilons - epsilons (2006)
genre: garage punk, garage rock revival
FFO: black bug, jay reatard, spoon
rating: 9/10
like sifting through your grandma's vintage toy box that's been sitting on the unenclosed porch for years. muddy, fuzzy, jolting, teeming with bacteria-- perhaps a rodent has made a nest in there. this album is a really solid display of "bang, clash" from the mid aughts and we love that. formulaic in ways but those cats were cooking up something good. has that lo-fi garage sound that you might seek. songs I would recommend: just wanna love you girl, evil robots, dressed up
thank you for reading if you made it this far let me know if you found something new and thank you and also goodnight and good morning.
xoxo, Lizzy
