why do I have to be mean?

I've noticed lately that people only listen to me or treat me right if I'm a little harsh towards them 

I feel like I have to force myself to not be as friendly with certain people because then they see that as me being someone they don't have to respect. its so weird. I don't want to have to be rude just to be listened to
