Honestly its mainly to stay in contact with others chat, make friends, hang out, share what's on your mind.. etc. I personally read blogs, bulletins, and forum posts the most and join in if I have something to add or share. Though most of the time I have nothing to say and lurk around.
I'd say just do what you're comfortable with. Playing around with your profile is always fun! I like browsing them, you always stumble across something interesting or someone you're interested in connecting with.
