also this does mean that my interpretation will be most likely WAY OFF from what the author intends, so, anyone who wishes to correct me or share their own opinions, PLEASE!!!! :D
so sorry
anyways today we have a rather long one, compared to the other poems i like to share, but i really find it neat :]

In The Desert, by Stephen Crane

--------------------------------------------

In the desert

I saw a creature, naked, bestial,

Who, squatting upon the ground,

Held his heart in his hands,

And ate of it.

I said, "Is it good, friend?"

"It is bitter--bitter," he answered;

"But I like it
"Because it is bitter,
"And because it is my heart."

---------------------------------------------

The creature is naked and of beast-like form. It speaks too - something the speaker can understand.
I like to believe that from the "creature" is actually of the speakers imagination, the desert might be suggesting they decided to explore, maybe even clear their head.

My opinion is that, simply, the "creature" is something the speaker might be dealing with. Most likely grief or regret of some kind, and they are trying to hold themself together.

The speakers heart is bitter, they suffer from some kind of loss; something that has ripped them apart so much, they naught question the creature when it eats it's own heart; moreover, doesn't question when it says it is bitter.
The speaker knows about their bitter heart.

It is here, I believe, the speaker starts to come to peace. I believe this poem is about the turning point of their exploration.

The speaker likes their bitter heart, not ONLY because it is bitter, but because of one simple thing:

It is simply their own.
