>>012: The Smasnug R40

In a section that I will call || Manky and Cool Stuff I Own || from here on out, I will discuss all the cool gadgets, trinkets, and computers I own. I own...a metric ass ton of computers, each serving their respective purpose. And what better way to start than with my main machine...the Smasnug R40.

Some of the more knowledgeable side of my audience and this blog post's visitors may know this exhibit of technology, and this may cause some genuine surprise. "Xeon!" You may say, "Why the hell are you using this manky old laptop as your DAILY no less?" Let me explain.

Certainly, the choice is odd. Considering the specifications of this piece of absolute JANK are a moflippin single-core Intel Celeron 420 (hehe nice) Mobile, 2 GB of RAM (upgraded from 512MB actually), an 80 GB IDE hard disk, a weight of almost 3 kilos (6.6 lbs), a nonfunctioning battery, an external Wi-Fi adapter and an operating system so manky and old it doesn't even load this website.

But there are genuine reasons why I still use this thing (although yes, I also have a different laptop that I use daily - I'll cover that one another time). For one thing, it's an absolute gorgeous piece of retro hardware and it feels incredibly satisfying to use. Sure, you do have to constantly sit near an outlet to use this stupid thing (and yes, batteries are available for purchase), but this typing machine is so manky it's really good to use. It's a great distraction-free method for me to take my notes, and I use this as a prop for my podcast.

Most importantly though, it was FREE. Yep! One of the perks of weaponized ADHD is that I get to be precise and accurate when it comes to hardware repair. So when my friend said "if you make it work it's yours", mate, you bet I took that personally.

also yes, it runs Discord.

And that's pretty cool.

Your friend really gave you this for free? Man, that's so nice. It might just run Stronghold Crusader... And uncanny discord on winxp with that 3d looking icon, does it lag when interacting with a discord server?

Side Note: I would've loved installing Debian on that!

That is DiscordMessenger, a community made Discord port made for operating systems as old as Win98, and while it's features may be limited, it is still very useful. And yeah, it lags...a bit, but nothing serious.

I really doubt Debian would work on this thing, though, lol
