Gyaru fashion

       What is gyaru?

The term gyaru (ギャル) originated from the english word “gal”, which was used in japan to refer to fashionable, trendy young women. In the early 90s, the gyaru style emerged as a form of rebellion against japans conservative beauty standards, which focused on the look of natural beauty, modesty and pale milky white skin. Traditional Japanese women were expected to be delicate, and demure, as gyaru was the complete opposite. Gyarus embraced tan skin, bold makeup, dyed hair and sexy flamboyant clothing.

As gyaru grew in popularity, it began to branch off in substyles, each with its own unique look and aesthetic. One of the earliest and most iconic looks of gyaru is the kogal style (コギャル). Kogal is heavily inspired by school girl fashion, consisting of short pleaded skirts, oversized cardigans, platform shoes and loose socks.

Moving on, agejo gyaru (age嬢 ) is a style that grew in the late 2000s/early 2010s, thanks to a magazine called ageha, the style mixes a look of sexiness, glamour and cuteness, worn by lots of girls who worked as hostesses but also appealing to women in their 20s to 30s. Pink, black and gold are more commonly seen colors of the style, and bows, florals and lace are common accessories found in agejo. Lingerie inspired pieces are also incorporated into this style. Hair is usually curly or wavy, sometimes hair extensions added for extra volume. For makeup, thick eyeliner, top and bottom lashes, light pink blush and dolly style circle lenses are also commonly seen and used. Due to the style having a more sexy and mature vibe to it, it is unlikely to see a teenager wearing agejo.

To conclude this blog post, were ending with hime gyaru (姫ギャル), hime translating to princess. Hime gyaru is a princess inspired gyaru, consisting of lots of bows, dresses, frills and tiaras. The color palette is usually soft, with lots of pink and white being used. The makeup is similar to agejo, with doll like lashes, pink blush and soft lip colors. Extravagant, lacy accessories play a big part of this style, with lots of blinged out accessories, or objects. Having voluminous curls is extremely important, its very common for woman to use hair pieces, or hair extensions to give the max volume possible.

ps:i wasnt sure if anyone was actually interested in blogs like this, so i only did a few sub-styles for now!^^
