did a couple less albums this week to try to give myself a little breather of sorts. we're getting there folks
as a refresher - italicized tracks are interludes, bolded tracks are my standouts (a.k.a. a 4.5 or higher),  a ★ indicates my favorite song, and an × indicates my least favorite song
(p.s. clicking on an album cover it'll take you to some more info about the album on rateyourmusic)
i present my rating system, THE SANDWICH SCALE
★★★★★ - toasted meatball sub / all-timer
★★★★½ - taylor ham egg and cheese / love

★★★½ - a nice flatbread / might order again if i'm in the mood
★★★ - a little soggy / average + good moments
★★½ - a little dry / average + boring
★★ - untoasted subway flatbread / pretty bad, mediocre at best
★½ - where are my toppings / quite bad

No esperan por nadie - Cóclea / Canut de Bon | 1977
post-hardcore | noise rock | screamo
★★★★
No esperan por nadie is split in half, with tracks 2-5 from cóclea and 6-9 from canut de bon. while i preferred the cóclea half i think both are pretty equal in quality - cóclea sort of meanders along with no real set pace, while canut de bon keep their songs under 3 minutes and are more punk influenced (sonically. i don't speak spanish). the screamo tag is what pushed me from listening to this for a while but it's not overly screamo which is nice. both halves manage to be distinct from each other while also creating a surprisingly cohesive album experience. reminds me of how i felt when i first listened to chat pile

this album is much more abrasive than i expected - i've heard one or two gfoty songs before and i guess they were more from the bubblegum bass days. i'm surprised how much i enjoyed this considering this is absolutely something that would've had a death grip on me when i was like 12. GRWM (Eww) was an especially fun moment imo both lyrically and with its industrial influences. some may write this album off as vapid and meaningless and sure but you can't listen to something like Gap Year (Sexy Body Ooh) and not have fun

i struggle with instrumental albums sometimes but i bit the bullet cause this is only 28 minutes. More Skin With Milk Mouth turns the wackiness dial up to 11 and while a math rock connoisseur may not find anything new, this album is incredibly well executed. not to "guy whose only heard black midi: Getting a lot of black midi vibes from this" but this really does remind me of Schlagenheim at parts, particularly I Am S/H(im)e[r] and Emilie Sagée’s Secret, which are the most black midi not-black-midi songs i've ever heard. my one thing is that i think the 9 minute songs could've been just a liiiittle shorter
for when you've spent all your cash by the time you get to schlagenheim

twee pop | noise pop | indie pop
★★★
a collection of oddly nostalgic, painfully millennial twee pop songs. this album leans hard on a few core songs, those being the first four, while the rest is just kind of lukewarm

an interesting, sugary sweet blend of glitch pop and shoegaze, this is maybe one of the most fitting album covers in history because it does sound like that. this is an album i appreciate more than i love - songs like Dsco and Chocolate Matter are pure ear candy (a sweet trip, some might say), but there are other moments, particualrly those that lean more into the ambient pop side, that left me wanting more. or less, i guess, since my main thing is that some songs feel like they drag on for much longer than they need to.

my only jane remover exposure thus far has been Revengeseekerz, and venturing is certainly a much softer, more relaxed side of her. Ghostholding leans heavily into shoegaze with dense, fuzzy production, so some of the less memorable songs are kind of hard to distinguish. i think her voice works really well in this setting, especially on Dead Forever and Recoil, on the latter of which she leans into a more emo inflection that suits her really well. these two manage to stand out in this tracklist as the brighter moments, and thus they're my favorites and also the only two i think i'd be able to recognize if you played this album for me on shuffle. this album is, however, an outstanding vibe and this will be fantastic in like, august.

singer-songwriter | blues rock
★★★½
blues is an element you can find in pretty much every tom waits album, probably the closest thing to pre-Swordfishtrombones (at this point, anyway) waits blues, but in my opinion this blows the early albums out of the water. Mule Variations has a good combination of tom waits' wittiness and drunken somberness. this album, i suppose, is a culmination of waits' entire career up to this point and while there certainly are some weaker tracks, it manages to never be boring despite its length.
