Since when did it become the norm to actually share your info on social media? I kinda miss the era of being a mysterious computer companion when you get back from school and turn on the family computer...
Also Ive recently learned that it only takes a few google searches to actually find someone's location. don't know how, but I'm kinda like... not... not okay with that...

Depends on the person. Not everyone is exposed to that degree, though an experienced scroller with decent soft and a solid dataset to start out could probably still find most people. This is especially true in the USA and UK, where most government records are either haphazardly filed or publicly accessible to begin with. You'd only have to know what to look for.
Other countries, which are either really bad or really good at digitalisation, are much more private; even just between different US states the variance is quite stark. Texas for example has such incredibly outdated systems, that remotely accessing any documentation, even those that should be available to the public, becomes a real struggle against defunct infrastructure and conflicting client protocols. Meanwhile in many European countries personal data is never privy to cyberspace in the first place. And countries like Indonesia don't even digitalise fuckall (or rather, they're incredibly slow in doing so).
Tl;dr: You're not wrong but only in regards to certain countries and/or indiscreet individuals.
