What is the hijab? What's its purpose?
As a muslim girl, I've always had questions about hijab, I listened to a lot of opinions, a lot of point of views, but in the end, I realized that people had lost the main point of hijab, and focused on its 'material' benefits.
'Why do muslim women wear hijab?' Most muslims answer this question this way:
- To prevent men from looking
- To avoid attention
But actually, these answers might bring even more questions, and they don't explain the real and main reason of hijab. So in this blog, I'll be showing my own pov of hijab and its benefits and reasons.
1. Hijab isn't just for women
Yes, a lot of people think that only women in Islam cover their bodies, but that's wrong, both men and women have their own 'dress code' which suits each one's roles, that's why they're not similar. For example:
- Women must cover their hair and neck, men don't have to
- Men can't wear silk or gold, women can
2. Hijab's main purpose and benefits
The first and most important purpose of hijab is 'Showing the identity', Hijab shows people that this person is a muslim, and shows pride and confidence in our religion.
The second purpose is modesty, not in a way that objectifies the body, but in an ethical way, if you get it, modesty has been an important morality for decades, and it's still important because it makes us different than other creations, like animals which are drivin by only their desires.
Then, there's protection, hijab protects men and women from unwanted, disgusting gazes, think of it like this: If you leave your door open, you should expect burglars to come in, but at the same time, it's not an excuse for them to come in. Clothes were never an excuse for any perverts, but it's definitely a good way to protect ourselves from them. And also, I'm not saying that men 'can't control themselves' and that 'women should cover themselves only', just like good people won't break into your house even if it's open, good people won't harass you whatever you're wearing.
If you continued till the end, thank you for reading this, I'm happy to receive any questions in the comments as long as they're polite and nice.
