1. Sadistic Personality: Niragi has been described as a sadist and violent personality who gets enjoyment from causing people pain and terror. He enjoys the pain and torture he inflicts upon others, both physically and emotionally. This cruelty is embedded in a sense of superiority, in which he believes that he is much more superior than others in the Borderlands. He abuses his power as the 2nd in command role during the beach, which is a major aspect of his personality. In season 2 of 'Osmosis', when Niragi attempted to sexual assault Yuzuha Usagi, he quoted on which she should just let him have fun, saying how they were bound to lose anyway and Ryōhei Arisu appeared, he was smiling and laughing when he was continuously punching him, hinting on no matter how much he changed, he'd still try again and have the same violent personality. When Kōdai Tatta died, Niragi was the one who stayed the longest in his 'grave', feeling 'bad' for the actions he did to him. It's hinted that Niragi saw his "old self" in Tatta, which is why he always made fun of him.
2. Psychological Fragility: In addition to his external bravado and cruelty, Niragi also exhibits psychological instability. Hisa cruelness is a defense mechanism or a reaction to past trauma. In the Borderlands, where survival is everything, Niragi's mind seems to deteriorate, and his vulnerable side is exposed that guides his acts. His actions, like his unstable behavior and hot-headed attitude, suggest that his emotional state is unstable, and it is this volatility that makes him volatile.
3. Survival Instinct: Niragi willing to betray others, take extreme measures, and commit heinous acts to ensure his own survival. His lack of empathy and willingness to exploit situations for personal gain make him a ruthless and psychotic character. His will to live is strong, from how he was shot multiple times, burned alive, and falling off a building, he still survived. He's driven from anger and revenge on a scapegoat.
4. Backstory and Motivation: In the show AND manga, Niragi used to be a regular student and a game engineer who used to be harassed by bullies. From what we saw, their torturous methods involved them hitting Niragi with baseball bats and balls, aiming certain parts of his body and gaining so called 'points'. Making his background and the events give some context to his behavior. His character is shaped by his life before he became who he is now and the psychological toll that the Borderland has taken on him. The Borderlands are a twisted version of reality, and Niragi’s descent into madness reflects the system’s ability to corrupt individuals.
5. Relationship with Other Characters: Niragi’s interactions with other characters, especially Arisu and Usagi, show his tendency to see others as either tools to use or obstacles to eliminate. He does not form alliances based on trust but rather manipulates situations to his advantage. His relationship with others is largely exploitative, and he is rarely seen as empathetic or compassionate.
In summary, Suguru Niragi is a character characterized by his sadistic tendencies, psychological instability, and ruthless survival tendencies. His absence of morals and eagerness to use people to their disadvantage render him a hazardous and unstable presence in the Borderlands. Understanding Niragi requires viewing him as a product of his surroundings, a man who has been molded by the savagery of the 'other world' and who acts based on a mix of cruelty, trauma, and an urge to survive at all costs.
