How Crochet Helps Me Focus (Even During TV Shows and Classes)

When most people think about crochet, they picture cozy blankets, colorful scarves, or maybe a cute stuffed animal. But for me, crochet is so much more than just a hobby — it’s one of the biggest tools I use to help myself focus, especially when I’m watching TV or sitting through long college classes.

I have ADHD, which means that staying focused — especially when I’m supposed to be sitting still and listening — can sometimes feel like running a marathon with one shoe untied. My mind wants to wander, my hands want to fidget, and before I know it, I’ve missed five minutes of a lecture or lost track of a TV show’s entire plotline. That’s where crochet comes in.

Crochet during TV time

A lot of people ask me, “How can you crochet and watch TV at the same time? Don’t you miss what’s happening on the screen?” Honestly, it’s the opposite. Crochet helps me stay connected to what I’m watching. When my hands are busy looping yarn and creating stitches, it gives the restless part of my brain something productive to do. That way, the rest of my mind can actually focus on what’s happening in the show instead of wandering off, daydreaming, or reaching for my phone every two minutes.

It’s like giving my brain a gentle anchor. I’m still absorbing the story, laughing at the jokes, gasping at the plot twists — but I’m also making progress on a project at the same time. (Bonus points: when I finish a season of a show, I also end up with a new scarf, blanket, or hat!)

Crochet during college classes

College classes are another place where crochet has been a total lifesaver for me. Sitting still for an hour (or more) while just listening can feel impossible some days. I used to find myself doodling, tapping my pen, or zoning out completely — no matter how interesting the class was.

When I started bringing small crochet projects to class (simple ones that I could work on without having to look down too much), everything changed. Keeping my hands moving in a repetitive, calming way actually made it easierfor me to stay tuned into the lecture. I wasn’t distracted — I was more focused than ever.

Of course, I’m always respectful: I choose quiet projects (no noisy yarn balls rolling across the floor!) and sit toward the back so I’m not distracting anyone else. But having a crochet hook and some yarn in my hands has helped me listen, process, and retain information so much better. Plus, it lowers my anxiety, which used to spike like crazy during long classes.

Crochet isn’t a distraction — it’s my superpower

For a long time, I worried that people might see my crochet as me not paying attention. But the truth is, crochet makes it possible for me to be more present. It calms my brain just enough to allow me to fully engage with what’s happening around me — whether it’s a lecture hall, a Netflix binge, or even a long Zoom meeting.

Crochet has become a part of my daily toolkit for managing my focus and my mental health. It’s not just a hobby; it’s a lifeline. And the best part? At the end of a stressful day, not only have I stayed focused, but I also have something beautiful that I made with my own hands.
