I am NOT new to metal, but finding new music is fun!
BUT two rules.
1. NO power metal (I dislike that sub-genre with a passion)
2. NO super mainstream stuff like: Metallica or stuff like that.
anybody got metal music suggestions?

Gehenna is quite nice. I'd define them as ethereal death metal. Another band that I'd categorize as "ethereal" is Lustre, which makes instrumentals.
Imperial Crystalline Entombment is a fun band. Fantasy lyrics, great riffs, and neat lore.

dont know what you count as mainstream but type o negative is my fav band, less known stuff would be sigh, putrid stu anddd sunami,
My mainstream bands have been played on TikTok, TV shows, or whatever. But thank you for the bands!
