。𖦹°‧ About books not worth reading

Today, my Arabic teacher talked about book reading assignments. She said that when she gives her students an assignment to read a book and talk about it, she banned novels. Her reasoning being that a lot of "today's" novels tell stories that are worthless, and don't provide anything useful to the reader. Anything advertised to teenagers is, by default, empty of anything meaningful.

They're books not worth reading. Books not worth writing.

We have evolved so much as creatures, that we don't have time for these things anymore.

Why waste your time reading a novel, when you can read something useful instead? Why have fun, when you can give yourself the illusion that you are better and smarter than everyone else instead? Why approve of the useless books that do nothing but connect your soul to the writer's, why write a story that does nothing but express the deepest parts of yourself to the world?

Why live when your life is this meaningless?

Are there shitty novels? Absolutely. I myself just finished reading one of these shitty novels I wish I never picked up, but despite that don't regret picking up. I never thought the author shouldn't have written it.

I don't know, do I just not think critically enough? I hated it, the characters were as shallow as the tune they danced to. The conclusion was so stupid that I checked the book's release date expecting it to be April 1st. But the thought, "It's not worth reading." I do not feel like I am qualified to look down on something like that, it is probably a sin. Something like that can only be said by God, only he can decide something someone poured their heart out into writing is worthless.

Not the teacher that never looked beyond the things she has decided are worth her time. Not the teacher who has never once had even a portion of the courage it takes to publish something she's written and put it on full display to the world.

There is no such thing as something not worth reading. There is no such thing as something not worth creating. This isn't something you should be declaring with full confidence in your position as an educator. Or rather, it's a disgusting thing to say in front of a bunch of 17 year olds.
