I think the biggest let down when I'm playing a debut horror game is that it's just.. not scary? So we'll change that!
Here are the 3 most important and easy pieces of advice to implement into your game:
𝗣𝗟𝗔𝗬▶ 𝗩𝗛𝗦
1. Smaller spaces
People tend to be more uncomfortable in smaller spaces where there is less space to maneuver when something happens. Also, if you make rooms smaller, you don't have to get so many assets there to fill up the space; it's a win-win!
✘ Final advice: make your rooms smaller
2. More context/dialogues
If you want a player to really connect to your world, use more dialogue and hints about what is important to the story. Also, cutscenes will say more than a thousand words, but sometimes you don't need them to say what you want to say.
✘ Final advice: Use more text
3. Time jumpscare sounds to actual jump scares
I saw so many times failed jump scares when the sound queue is before the actual threat appears, and it ruins the whole experience. Pay extra attention to it, especially when it's the climax of the game.
✘ Final advice: Make sure the sound is timed perfectly with the visual jumpscare.
That's all for today! Make sure to let me know if you agree with my pointers :3
