Minecraft and Me
I have been playing Minecraft longer than the target audience for this movie has been alive. The year was 2013, I was in my last year of primary school, I spent one day a week at a gifted kids program in the nearest town and I had a friend there named Victoria. Victoria was super cool because she had an ipod touch, and this ipod touch had Minecraft pocket edition. I was immediately enraptured by this charming little game and begged my mum to get it for me on the computer. I started playing Minecraft after the redstone update but before the horse update (or it might have been before the redstone update but maybe I just didn't care about redstone the way a 10 year old girl cares about horses). I played on and off over the next 12 years, as is typical of the way you play Minecraft (24/7 for 2 weeks at a time, I'm currently in an intense Cobblemon phase), on various platforms, Java, Bedrock and Pocket Edition.
I've also been watching Minecraft Youtubers for the same amount of time. Back in the day it was DanTDM, SkyDoesMinecraft, JeromeASF, Huskymudkipz, and CaptainSparklez. Later it was Wilbur Soot, TommyInnit, Philza Minecraft, and Technoblade. Now it's Grian, Geminitay, PearlescentMoon, TangoTek, and CaptainSparklez (truly a timeless classic).
When the trailer for the movie came out, I will say I was disappointed. Who wouldn't be after being a Minecraft fan for over a decade and then seeing a 2010s "what if minecraft was real life???" video being passed off as a blockbuster movie? I really never planned on watching the movie at all, since movies are so expensive these days. But as clips from the movie started coming out after release, ngl, I did kinda find the tiktok brainrot style stuff a bit funny. My boyfriend's mum offered to pay for our movie tickets so we watched it in theatre.
Going into the movie
I think what contributed most to me finding this movie enjoyable is going in with the mindset of "I am here to watch Jack Black say things in a funny voice for an hour and 40 minutes". As much as I personally think this is a good movie, this is not a good movie. This is a movie made for 12 year olds and you need to remember that. If you are not fully mentally prepared to watch a movie made for 12 year olds DO NOT WATCH THIS MOVIE!!! I am not a fine film enjoyer, I do not partake in French cinema nor do I care about the Oscars in any way. I like movies with messages that appeal to me and I love movies that are stupid and I can laugh at, and those are usually separate things. The Minecraft Movie is firmly in the second category and I knew this from the start.
What contributed second most was we watched the movie in an empty theatre, it was just the 3 of us and one other adult couple. NO CHILDREN! I love watching silly kids movies, but I hate children. If you want to enjoy this experience then either watch the movie at home or make sure you'll be in a theatre with no kids, this is crucial.
A Minecraft Movie
What I liked:
- The characters. It's a cast of silly guys playing silly characters. Jack Black knows this movie is unserious and fully commits to playing a very unserious character. Same with Jason Momoa. When we first found out Jack Black was cast as Steve I thought it'd be horrible, he is totally not Minecraft Steve. But you kind of just have to accept that this movie is not true to Minecraft. It would be boring if Steve was a silent protagonist. I like to think that Jack Black is not Minecraft Steve, but just a guy named Steve who happens to be in Minecraft. I also love the rest of the main cast, and especially Jennifer Coolidge in her B plot.
- The jokes. Especially any made by side characters. The art class intro by the art teacher was genuinely so funny to me. I love cringefail adult characters.
- The cameos. I love that they included actual Minecraft Youtubers. That was just cool. I did also tear up a bit at the Technoblade reference.
- It's filmed in Huntly. I cannot convey to anyone who doesn't have a familiar relationship with Huntly how funny this is to me. Why Huntly????? The chip factory is just straight up the power station. I was dying during the entire earth section because it's just???? Huntly????? Big love to Huntly and anyone who lives there, but it's the last point of significant civilization along the Waikato which is just a shit river by the time it gets past Hamilton and I don't think anyone has actually been there since the bypass was put in.
What I didn't like:
- The plot. I was pretty meh on everything going on. It wasn't interesting enough for me to be invested in anything actually happening, but it was enough to facilitate funny moments.
Overall, very fun and silly movie if you want to laugh at something stupid for an hour and 40 minutes. Don't go in expecting anything and don't watch it with children around.
Here are some photos I took with my 3DS during the movie :)
