care for a listen? (my fav weird albums)

Hello fellow computer pixels!!!! Here's a non-exhaustive list of my favourite weird albums that have some sort of broader theme/concept or just speak to me in a silly way. "Weird" is not meant in a negative or derogatory way! Most of the things I enjoy are weird and I like a lot of stuff specifically because of how weird it is.

enjoy :P

PS: I'm not spellchecking this, so be prepared for errors. Also feel free to correct me about artist info or add stuff in the comments if you know more.

The Croaks, CROAKUS POKUS (2023)

The Croaks are a self described "Boston ragged post-hot-folk-rock" band with a medieval twist. Their debut album Croakus Pokus found me on instagram, when I saw a video of the band performing their song Big Bug off of the album. It stands out from the court-jester-esque charm that otherwise defines their sound and instantly spoke to me and my irrational fear of winged insects.

This album never fails to transport me into my favourite artistic period of human existence (medieval times) and has provided me a wonderful foundation for daydreams, feverish nightmares and dnd campaigns alike.

favourite songs: Big Bug and Cuttyhunk Isle

The B-52's, THE B-52'S (1979)

The B52's are a us-american new wave band that formed in the mid 1970s and were at the height of their fame in the early 80s. I first heard about them (surprise, surprise) on instagram when someone made a story post with their song Girl From Ipanema Goes To Greenland. I really like the silly vibe of their music and tbh I never really know what its about (bc i need like 5 years of constantly listening to a song to comprehend the meaning of lyrics and I refuse to google them unless I am forced to) but I don't mind!!

Last year I had a little halloween party where I played this album in the background a couple times while we had dinner and I have to say it fit the vibe perfectly. The album is not spooky per se but it has the same vibe as the monster mash if it was a summer song.

favourite songs: Planet Claire and Girl From Ipanema Goes To Greenland

Ween, THE MOLLUSK (1979)

I don't know anything about Ween so I'm not going to pretend to do so. I also just found out about this album a few days ago so I want to enjoy it before I do research and find out unpleasant things about the people involved. I found this album via the description of the Croak's apple music page, where they say that this is one of their favourite albums. Apple Music also says this album was a major inspiration for everyone's favourite ocean creature feature, Spongebob Squarepants. Listening to the album with this information at the back of my mind made me remember the masterpiece that is the 2004 Spongebob Squarepants Movie...oh how sad it is to see what that show has become....

Anyway! The album is great! I loooooove how committed they were to staying on theme and I think it was executed just beautifully!!! I think, just like The B-52's, this would make a wonderful album to play at a halloween party or another themed event.

favourite songs: The Mollusk and The Golden Eel

Bernice, CRUISIN' (2023)

Bernice is a canadian band that wikipedia describes as "indie pop" although I dont know if that label really does justice to their style of music. I really enjoy the non-linear structure of their songs and it is a very pleasant experience for me to listen to this album. It reminds me a little bit of adventure time background music, which is very close to my heart because adventure time is my special interest. If you like this album and/or adventure time I can highly recommend checking out Bernice's other albums and TV-composer Tim Kiefer's adventure time vault tracks on his soundcloud page

Unsurprisingly, I also found this album because someone made a post with a song off of it on their instagram story. Shoutout to everyone who has ever posted their favourite songs on instagram. I am listening to them all and fueling my never ending desire for new music.

favourite songs: Second Judy and Barbara and It's Your Tree

cleo, BATHYNOMUS GIGANTEUS (2021/2022)

This album by australian musician cleo is about isopods and, according to the artist, also about autism "even if [they] didn't 100% know it at the time of making it". It is a largely instrumental album which examines the lives of isopods from both a scientific as well as poetic standpoint.

Bonus lore: This album was released some time in 2021 or 2022 under the artist name isopod on spotify and something6 on apple music. Currently, the artist has no music officially released anymore and goes by cleo on soundcloud and instagram. This album is very special to me and I have only recently been able to listen to it again, because it was taken off streaming, soundcloud and bandcamp by the artist about two years ago. Thanks to my hero, Soundcloud user Rock, who had repeatedly commented on a newer release from cleo, asking her to rerelease Bathynomus Giganteus, I found a link posted by cleo to a google drive that finally reunited me with this album.

favourite songs: protection spell and um...

MC crying croc and the seeds of gloom, I KNOW YOU COMMITTED ARSON LAST JULY (2021)

This artist doesn't just produce some of my favourite electronic sounds but also some of my favourite visuals. The experimental musician and talented brazilian illustrator João Bresler has been a constant inspiration to me for many years now. Their musical debut I KNOW YOU COMMITTED ARSON LAST JULY came out after I had already been following her artistic endeavours on instagram for a couple years. Seeing two sides of their creative expression is always very rewarding and I cannot praise her talents in both areas enough. I thoroughly enjoy listening to their music and it fuels my motivation to experiment with sound more and more in my music production as well.

favourite songs: lemur dance/KABOOM and I KNOW YOU COMMITTED ARSON LAST JULY

Sonoko, LA DEBUTANTE (1988)

This japanese indie-pop album is a combination of dreamy, almost haunting love songs, readings of poetry and covers of various western artists, arranged to fit in flawlessly with the rest of the album. It is split into a "Heaven Side" and a "Garden Side". If you like music along the lines of Caroline Polacheck, Björk, Bon Iver or yeule, you might enjoy this as well.

Truthfully, I haven't listened to this album for a while but I have to list it here because it sparked my love for weird music. I have this on vinyl, which is the format in which I first listened to this album. I didn't have any streaming subscriptions up until 2022 and there were a few years where the way I would find new music was that I would go to second hand vinyl sales and buy vinyls based on how much I liked the covers. This was one of the first of such purchases and although it took me a bit to get into it I am forever grateful to have picked it up.

favourite songs: Souvenir De La Mer and Wedding With God (à Nijinski)

.....TO BE CONTINUED :)
