might be hot take
ok ngl i dont really care abt posers THAT much and i dont like it when ppl call others "newgens" just because their new to a fandom or something but i hate when ppl just like find media and they like the aesthetics and it makes them look cool js cuz its like underground and edgy and just list it as like one of their interests when they don't actually try to indulge in it and stuff. indulge as in ENJOY it; like you actually like it and you didn't just like watch/play/listen to it once and now you add it as one of your interests even though you don't ACTUALLY enjoy it you just think it makes you look cool. IG i js don't like it when ppl superficially pretend to like things bc dude like not every game/novel with cool graphics/characters are engaging/well made. i mean it might be hypocritical for me to judge others interests by "its not that good" because things are subjective but i think there are objective like standards to if a media is well made or not. I also think that it is totally ok to just like the art but then don't pretend to be a fan yknow? and also i dont like it when ppl judge others for liking more mainstream things; it makes sense for ppl to like mainstream things bc theres usually a good reason it is popular. I hate when ppl just look for less well known things that are (no offense) BADLY MADE just to be different, and when their niche interests are more well known they are mad bc it doesnt make them unique anymore. i do think there are exceptions such as if your angry bc ppl used to make fun of you for liking this thing and now that its mainstream ppl magically started liking it too (MY PERSONAL EXPERIENCE WITH HYPERPOP). NOW IK there is a lot of underground stuff that is just unfairly underrated. But i think its kind of part of our job as part of a fandom to boost its popularity, not gatekeep these medias (COUGH COUGH VKEI COMMUNITY). I also hate when mainstream stuff kinda waters down concepts, but i think thats part of like introducing ppl to that genre or making it more digestable- however sometimes that is against the philosophy of a genre.
IG my main point is to just be true to yourself instead of chasing mainstream aesthetics and like, pretending to be in fandoms just bc they have cool graphics which i see a lot these days with this influx of like certain aesthetics associated w mangas and games that are underground.
idk if this makes sense but yeah
edit: this is kinda about some ppl in my life that i saw like someone literally added like 20 of these games/mangas into their like interests list in like a span of 1 week and i KNOW they did not indulge in these medias because 1. they don't even have the proper setup to play some of these games 2. they have a busy schedule and i know them VERY well to know they did not collect these interests over a long span of time- these medias are also like very similar in terms of recent aesthetics that have arose; granted not all of them are like underground but some of them are

I definitely definitely DEFINETLY!!!!!!!! agree with this point as someone who's temporarily engaged with certain J-fashion communities and also been into alt fashion for like. YEARS NOW. I know I'm a broken record saying this. Still, it needs to be repeated, yes TikTok is affecting subcultures because now instead of adopting random "cores" such as "tropicalcore" "cottagecore" or microtrends like "eclectic grandpa" (I think that's what that one was called), their microtrendifying existing subcultures... it's just really bothersome i hate to be a gatekeeper and whatever but it feels like when you turn alternative subcultures "trendy" you start getting the wrong people inside the community,, alternative subcultures are all about going against societal norms and expectations when it comes to beauty and looks and of course the music and culture (i swear to god again im not trying to repeat the same sentiments given by everybody else but subcultures are MORE THAN THEIR AESTHETICS) and it feels like once it starts becoming cool to just claim ur part of an alt subculture you attract people who's morals don't neccesarily line up with those of the subcultures. I have a lot more to say abt that, but I've already yapped enough LOL sorry
for real bro and literally i just see calling every alt subculture emo like broo
