[Anime] Apocalypse Hotel - currently airing

Every new season, my irrational fear of the thing I decided not to watch turning out to be one of the best things in existence, gets a little more rational.

I was not going to watch this because I assumed it’s just your stereotypical post apocalyptic story which, admittedly, it is, but it’s a good one. This reminds me that it’s not really bad for things to be stereotypical sometimes.

Basically, it is about a group of robots who work at a hotel, and despite all of humanity having escaped from Earth, they continue to run the hotel, awaiting humanity’s unlikely return. The “leader” robot is a cute girl called Yachiyo.

The thing that stood out to me the most in the first episode is Yachiyo’s, I’m not sure what to call it, her character, I guess? Writing robot characters is really easy to fuck up in my opinion, but she’s adorable. The way she’s constantly performing every task perfectly, always believing that the humans will come back, even when she did get depressed because the shower hat was missing (which according to Yachiyo causes the likelihood of guests enjoying their stay to drop to 0%, shes so cute (о´∀`о)), she still got herself back up, continuing to live out her purpose. 

It’s admirable, in a way? To just do what you are capable of doing, even when it doesn’t feel like it’s paying off. I don’t know how to explain it very well, but it makes me happy. 

In episode 2, it seems like she gets this attitude from the hotel owner’s teachings. At first I thought, wow he’s such a horrible guy, he sentenced these poor robots to a lifetime of working for a day he’s not sure will even come. But now that we’ve seen more of him, he might not be so bad after all. He probably genuinely did believe humans will come back. And he didn’t dispose of Yachiyo who’s apparently a “defective”.
