Rant about alternative culture

A lot of alt subcultures (like punk + grunge) were based off of poverty. Yet so many “alt” people get mad when alt people don’t exclusively shop at local store because “big brands are bad! 🥺” Okay? Have you SEEN the prices of local stores? The average person CANNOT afford 200$ pants or 15$ dish soap. You know who can afford that stuff? WHITE COLLAR RICH CAPITALIST PEOPLE. What happened to “eat the rich”? 

This also applies to THOSE people who tell you to boycott every big brand ever. Not everyone is as privileged as you and most people HAVE to buy from big brands sometimes. “Just shoplift then!” I don’t know if you forgot, but shoplifting is ILLEGAL AND DANGEROUS. 

Also, yes, I am aware that DIY is a big part of alt culture. But once again many alt people have to thrift from big stores because they don’t want to rip up 50$ vintage jeans. Unfortunately those annoying ass privileged people show up and say “omg you’re supporting a big brand!” JUST. SHUT. UP. OMFG. 

The music too. Oh boy. I’m a poser now because I listen to Green Day, MCR and The Cure and not “The Plastic Baby Head Fuckers” with -12 listeners who only have one song that’s just incessant screaming. Sorry that I don’t enjoy that! “But Green Day, MCR and The Cure are sellouts!” How does that affect their music and origins??? I get that they’re rich, but they’re not bad people. They’re not like Elon Musk who exploits people all the time and feels zero remorse. People like him are the rich people we should be targeting.

Some alt people are gatekeeping because people choose to stay safe??? I don’t have political patches because I am an AFAB minor and I don’t want to get beat up. I also have social anxiety so I feel very unsafe wearing controversial political opinions on my sleeve. Just because I’m not public about my opinions doesn’t mean I don’t have them. Another issue on this topic is the expectation that all alt people have to do illegal stuff. I don’t want to do that. I don’t want to go to shows because once again I am an AFAB minor and I would rather avoid potential SA, mosh pits and substances. Am I a poser for just keeping safe now?

Idk I feel like alt culture is so strict sometimes and it’s scaring off new alt people.
