Hey I just went into the cinema because I saw a review from the youtube channel "behaind", who praised the movie "sing sing" as one of the best movies he has ever seen. And well I really do respect his opinions as a reviewer. So when I saw that the movie was running here at my local cinema for 2 days, I just knew that I had to watch it. It did cost me 12€ for the ticket + 5€ for a small coca cola to support my local cinema a little. Ain't got all the money in the world
So before I tell you all about the movie I gotta tell you all 2 things. First of all there was 30 minutes of ads before the movie even startet. Which is getting pretty extensive. And secondly, they accidently showed the wrong movie for like 10-20 minutes. Idk which movie it was, but it started in the 1970's in rio de janero with a couple of teens getting searched through by police because they were suspected terrorists. Which really confused me, as none of the character even looked remotly like the ones on the posters, and the setting also didn't match. But anyway, they fixed it. So after 40 minutes of waiting, I finally gor to watch the movie I wanted to watch.
Sing Sing:
This section will obviously contain spoilers, so be warned.
So to give you guys a quick run down of the plot. The main character played by Colman Domingo is part of a prison theater group which just finished their last act, which was shakespears "a midsummer dream" if I remember correct. And for their next act they are looking for new member, where the gangster "devine eye" played by himself (clarence Maclin) wants to join their group because he read parts of hamlet while he had nothing else to do.
Different to the other members of the theater group, he does not want to partake in any group practices, as he was put into a gangster role by the people around him, so he pushes those things away from him. However through a lot of time and getting used to the rest of the group and some serious talkings, he gets better and better at acting in his roles and even takes part in the different group practices.
But when everything seemed like it was going perfect, mike mike, the best friend of the main character and the rest of the group, suddendly died of a brain annurism. Which really takes a tole on everyone in the group, especially the main character. Furthermore the attempt of the main character to get set free via an old voice recording of someone saying that they did the crime the main character sat in prison for the last 10+ years gets rejected due to that guy being dead for years by that point. While devine eye comes free with far less evidence.
All those things really put the main character down until he breaks down during a practice, after which he lefts the group. But after some time and talking to he rejoins and they finish their act.
This was just a really quick rundown of what happened. So to get into a bit more detail on a few aspects of the story. I was like constantly grining during the first half of the movie, up until the point that mike mike dies. The movie does a 180°, after which I nearly teared up for the main character. It was really really sad seeing him being put down again and again, first his best friend dying, then loosing his opportunity of being set free and after that seeing the guy he helped being set free. So you really do understand when he breaks down during a final practice.
And it's really nice that devine eye, who throughout the movie was thought that anger is not the way to go, showing the main character how to overcome his anger and sadness, as he did before with him. So they reversed the roles for the two characters.
And also it's just really really nice to see all the charisma all the characters have together, nothing feels forced, everything the characters say and do feels natural and as they are supposed to be.
Seeing devine eye becoming more and more of a member of the theater group is just so nice to see. From going to the gangster from the beginning, who threatened devine G (main character) with a knife because he gave him a serious talk at the beginning of the movie, to a friend of his who becomes the new best friend of devine G, I mean he even comes back to the prison to take Devine G home from prison once he finally gets released at the end of the movie. Seeing the two Hug at the end of the movie, with Devine G crying in the arms of Devine eye is really beautiful after knowing what everyone went through.
In total all the empathy the movie gives to the prisoners is just amazing, they are not only portrait as human beings with emotions who can learn and change as human beings, but I mean they never once tell us why the people were put in prison in the first place. We only know the reason for devine G, because we saw his failed attempt at regaining his freedom live unfolding.
So I don't even have anything bad to say about the movie, I find it to be almost the perfect movie, I just can't think of something that is even missing. Maybe there is nothing and it is the perfect movie. Anyway it gets a 15/10 for me. I can advice every single person who reads this to go and watch the movie. Give it a chance. Maybe it's running in your local cinemas at the moment. Or you can find a Dvd or Blue ray of the movie, or maybe you find a streaming service that shows the movie. But in any case, I want every single one here to watch the movie!!
