my favorite media (games, tv, movies, online phenomenon & entities, etc.)

i didn't think i would make this blog post, but i asked my Spacehey friends what they would be interested in among multiple options i was willing to post, so here we are. music isn't on this list because music isn't in the media category for me; it's holier than that

1. COOKIE RUN: KINGDOM

stupid cookiegame. stuuuupid cookie game. it's like drugs for my brain, and i'm being literal. i'm not especially proud of it, i don't talk about it that often, i definitely don't like to associate myself with or define myself by fandom, because fandom is so entrenched in capitalism, but when it's really late at night or really early in the morning, and i can't quite face the day without getting a dopamine hit, because i live in hell, i play. the stupidcookiegame

^this is my dream team of cookies; the ones i think are the cutest/prettiest/most well-designed, in my favorite of their costumes

2. DIARY OF A WIMPY KID: FRESHMAN YEAR

the original trilogy is now a close second. to this. specifically, i did get a little bit hyperfocused this morning on Eli Haynes, who plays Rodrick in Freshman Year. he's such a cool guy, and his band (because he actually makes music!!) is called Elaine With Well Wishes. and his music, you guys, it's not bad. this is my favorite song by his Pieces (Spotify) // Pieces (YouTube)

3. HATSUNE MIKU

she's just -- so many different things at once, because she can be, because she belongs to the world, to people, she doesn't belong to one corporation, she is for us all. kind of like God

4. HOW TO BE COOL & HOW TO BE COOL 2

these little episodes are so special to me. especially Peeb

i relate to Peeb a lot, i think, and i think she's fucking cool as hell already

5. PONYO

ponyo (2008) is not about love - or, it's not about romantic love. ponyo is about survival, resilience, familial love, friendship, and joy

and when i say it's about survival & resilience, i mean it's about...heat. it was so hot, the second time i saw it. not the first time, i don't remember the first time, i would've been too young. but i remember the second time. the second time i saw ponyo, i was with...i don't remember her name. i'm sorry. but i remember her. she was younger than i was, or acted like it, she was very sweet, and she invited me over to her house. she had it on DVD. it was nighttime, but the air felt baked. it would've been hard to breathe, but her parents fed us a good dinner, a few fans were going, and the ocean was coming through their old TV. i never saw her again, but we parted on good terms, drifted apart naturally, like tide going out. and i will always remember that night. that's what ponyo is about. to me

6. MUTAZIONE

this game isn't a perfect thing, y'know? both mechanically and as a piece of art, i have some critiques of it. mainly that it appears to be some kind of mesh of stereotypes from multiple different island cultures, but that's for another day / another rant but it does have real depth to it. you see that depth when you meet these islanders for the first time, and when you sit next to the grieving young mother as she describes losing the kids you didn't even know she had, and

this game is about grief, and change, and the hope that comes from community, and i revisit it every so often and i feel held. there's not a lot else like it

7. MEGAMIND

what the fuck else were you expecting?? it's the single greatest film ever made. and i'm not gonna pull some bullshit about how megamind himself is specifically written to be any certain marginalized identity, but i will say he is every marginalized identity all at once; watching this movie when i was younger was one of the first times i realized it was okay to be deemed "bad"

and from there it was a short sprint to "i can be queer, i can be disabled, i can be myself, and someone might still love me" thank you megamind. obviously fuck all corporations and fuck all celebrities & actors and the next time i watch this i will pirate it, but god i am glad i grew up with it
