What's ICP?

Insane Clown Posse is a hip hop duo formed by Violent J (Joseph Bruce) and Shaggy 2 Dope (Joseph Utsler) that started in 1992. Although the band is primarily described as horrorcore, their songs can also combine genres such as hardcore hip hop, rap rock, underground hip hop, etc.

In this blog, i’ll try to break it all down - what the Dark Carnival is, what the Joker’s Cards mean, and why it’s way deeper than it might seem.

Dark Carnival

The Dark Carnival is ICP's unique way to of exploring morality, judgment, and redemption.

This concept was inspired by a Joseph Bruce's dream where spirits in a traveling carnival appeared to him and after this, the group decided to incorporate it into their bands' newly created persona

The Dark Carnival is a carnival that appears to souls after death. What happens there depends on how that person lived their life. It's a symbolic place where people are judged by the Joker's Cards, each one represents different moral messages and life choices.

Joker's Cards

These are albums, but also metaphysical entities in the lore. Each card reveals a specific lesson or judgment. To put it more simply, albums are the cards in the decks!

At the time of writting this, there are two decks:

1st Deck

Each album (card) in the first deck introduces a different character who acts as a mirror to human behavior

1.- Carnival of Carnage: Violence and neglect in inner cities

2.-The Ringmaster: Karma and consequence

3.- The Riddle Box: Judgement after death (you open the box to see your fate)

4.- The Great Milenko – Illusions and distractions from salvation

5.- The Amazing Jeckel Brothers – Weighing sins vs good deeds

6.- The Wraith: Shangri-La – Heaven and revelation that the Dark Carnival is God

7.- The Wraith: Hell’s Pit – Hell and damnation for the wicked

2nd Deck

In this deck, ICP continuing the themes but with a new generation of characters. at this time, it includes:

1.- Bang! pow! Boom!

2.- The Migthy Death Pop!

3. - The Marvelous Missing Link: Lost / Found

4. - Fearless Fred Fury

5. - Yum Yum Bedlam

*This deck will be completed with the announced sixth card "The Naught"
