I just had a debate with my parents because I'm working on an art project on photoshop and i asked how to add a reference image (I use ibs paint on mobile and there's a feature where you can add an image in the corner of your screen that you can use to help you see an example of whatever you're drawing) and APARANTLY the only thing close to a reference image in photoshop is GENERATIVE AI EXAMPLES i looked on youtube, reddit, tiktok, and various articles and every time i was left unsatisfied (the reference image process: circle an area with the generative ai tool-->click on the small image icon-->upload an image--> HAVE AI REGENERATE THE IMAGE ONTO YOUR PICTURE SO THAT IT SHOWS HOW IT WOULD LOOK ON THE CANVAS--> USE THAT STUPID IMAGE AS A REFERENCE) I hate it I hate it I hate it I hate it. I need a way to use a REAL reference image originally made by A REAL TALENTED PERSON so I can make REAL art. The right way.
If any of you have any ideas on how to have a reference image open without having to switch tabs/windows please let me know in comments. For the sake of REAL artists everywhere I need to share the information

Pureref is a free program you can download that lets you drag and drop your reference images into it for a reference window that you can use as a separate window you can look at while using another program such as photoshop or clip studio paint.
I highly recommend it if you use multiple references or the program doesn't have a reference feature.
Additionally, you can pin it to the top so that the window doesn't go away.

make a layer, copy and paste reference image onto your canvas, set the transparency layer as low as you want, then draw on a different layer
this trick works for all sorts of drawing software, I personally use krita and medibang paint
