content creator SMP lore! #MCYT

created 080425

Okay so I just had to write this down.

I would say that there are five levels to SMP lore. I saw a YouTube comment that mentioned three, but I feel like that doesn't really capture the entire thing. As an expert in MCYT (self-proclaimed), I would say that these are the five levels.

  1. There is basically no lore. Any "lore" is just silly fun. There are shenanigans and pranks that could possibly form a story, but there is nothing that could be considered 'lore.' I'm not entirely sure if this is correct but I think that Outcasts (at least Season 2) would be fit into this category.
  2. There is lore but only really in the background. Think Hermitcraft. There's always something going on with the government in Hermitcraft, but the server is mostly just people having fun and hanging out. Adding on: the lore is created for the need of something different since these SMPs tend to be so casual.
  3. How do I even explain this? Lifesteal. Where it's like... the story is kind of the main part, but it's neither scripted nor planned. The lore is built off of different events that the creators decided would be good for content, etc. This is #friendshangingout competitive edition as that competition turns into the lore.
  4. The server is generally very roleplay-focused. Things may be scripted, but they usually are not. The point is that the server is trying to tell a story [or multiple]. Think Kaboodle SMP. The lore is not created out of competition or boredom, that is just the point of the SMP itself (Note: SMPs that were not originally created for lore can become these - i.e. Dream SMP).
  5. Everything is lore. The entire SMP is scripted or staged to the point where it's not even an SMP. This is Unstable Universe. The only 'SMP' part about it is the storytelling format.

Just to be clear: this is about server-wide lore, nothing specific to certain people unless it is important to the server's overall lore.

Also, the line between #2 and #3 may be blurry. But the point is that events on #3 SMPs that can be interpreted as lore are very commonplace because those events are kind of the point, but it's not so much roleplay. And the events of #2 SMPs are a little more lore-oriented but they are less commonplace. People on both types of SMPs may decide to play as characters.

The difference between those two and #1 is that there is very little lore on #1, be it accidental or purposeful. The difference between those two (#2 and #3) and #4 is that #4 is specifically for telling story(s).

Bye. I think I had more to say but I don't have time so...
