my reflection on the old internet and why we want old social media again.

recently i created a neocities page because i got inspired by so many creative neocities i found. i love journaling and scrapbooking, so i wanted to try my hand in a digital version. i had html lessons back in high school; it was a looong time ago, so i'm trying to relearn everything again. it's challenging but super fun!!

i want to write about why i made a spacehey/neocities and why i'm learning coding: i want my childhood back. crazy websites and blogs like geocities were a little bit before my time. but i grew up in the peak of child-friendly internet things - mainly flash games on cartoon network, barbie, mmos, etc. even youtube was more fun, because everything felt personal. i grew up with the first iphones and the rise of social media. social media was fun; there were real funny people, dumb-funny images and people really connecting. the internet was great for me, an introverted and shy child (and unknowingly neurodivergent), to have fun and be safe (for the most part, but that's a whole 'nother issue).

now everything is corporate. everything is sterile. social media is only for numbers and to get people to buy things. tiktok was good for a bit - it has creative people - but now it's fallen into that loop of being a constant ad-show.

i want the internet to be fun again. i want younger generations to stumble upon funny and cringy blogs/sites. i want to see colors from all directions (no strobing tho!!) i want to see funny little gifs and stamps. i want to read about people from different cultures, points of view, lives, without being told its' "cringe". i want to bring back the old internet. i want to have fun again.
