my take on ai for education

note : like the nerd i am i value actually learning stuff from school and do believe school is important in many ways. idc if you use ai, i don't think anyone is any dumber or smarter than me for using ai, because a good portion of students k-12 don't like going to school anyway, and bc not going to school with the exception of being homeschool is kind of illegal, so i understand people using ai to just pass school or whatevs. this is just my reasons on why i personally don't rlly use ai. 

my personal reasons to why i refrain from using ai in education, even as a tool (in the correct sense)

- technological dependence (+ a twinge of laziness)

it's clear that people unwilling to do their schoolwork will use ai (incorrectly) to complete their work for them. however, i feel that this can even apply to students who use ai as a tool, say to condense a long lecture, or a lengthy amount of pages they need to read. sure, it saves a lot of time, but over time i feel you lose the ability to summarize large amounts of information presented to you, which is a really important skill to have. so unfortunately-fortunately for me, i WILL make myself condense hundreds of pages of information once i reach that point in my education even though it’s arduous. i don’t care if other students really do this because it beats popping addys to get through the semester. honestly, as long as you find a way to retain that ability to condense information without always using ai, i’m pretty sure you’ll be alright.

- errors (i’m only covering ai like grammarly here, not accounting for any inaccuracies made when consulting with ai to help with citing argumentative/research papers because i don’t have experience with using ai for that purpose)

i already don’t like when the auto correct on google docs tries to correct me on my last name, let alone grammarly giving me dumb suggestions 30% of the time i used to use it. if i need help with grammar or things i think need improvement; i’ll ask my teacher for help.

- job displacement

this is the one a lot of people are worried about, but this is unfortunately one of the things about ai i don’t worry too much about it. like, yes ai will definitely replace some jobs. i definitely won’t be too happy about it along with other people, but like this same thing happened when alarms were invented and they no longer needed to hire people to wake up early, and ring a loud bell around town to wake people up. as technology develops in general, some jobs will be replaced, and ai is one of those technologies that will replace some jobs. one thing for sure is that ai definitely won’t be taking all our jobs, but i myself can’t say how many jobs ai will take from humans. I mean we as people don’t really have aspirations to work as the town’s alarm clock the same way those people over 3 centuries ago did. 

- bias (and just lowkey stupid)

grok ai is currently known for an alleged bias, and having ai hallucinations (like many other ai programs). this was the first thing that came to my mind and there was a specific tweet i wanted to back it up with but i can’t even find it, and backing up this with a tweet is pretty counterproductive in helping prove my point, because it’s from twitter and you can’t rlly trust anything you see from that app. but in general you can gaslight ai into thinking they’re wrong even if they are right, because after all they’re machines that are using the data provided to them to become “smarter”. props to grok for being woke tho i guess.

Update on this blog:  my beliefs on the use of ai have "radicalized" a bit as I'm a lot more against using ai, even if it's as a "tool" for what I'm seeing from people on my Instagram feed..everything about AI is a tool! Everything that they ask AI to do is anything they could most definitely do on their own. It really disappoints me when I see these people not only openly using ai but ENCOURAGING and advertising for people to use ai. I see tips on how to survive as an engineering major; one of the tips is "Please use ai" ?? It baffles me.
