Something that has always bothered me is the misuse of the words 'when' and 'whenever', so I have to rant about it. I'm a certified keyboard & spelling warrior with a C2 certificate, so you will NEVER (I'm lying) see me make a mistake in English (we do not discuss about my native language guys :p).
BASIC RULES:
We use the adverb 'when' to refer to a time or circumstance.
EX:
- "When did they leave?"
- "When I was younger, I used to play outside every day."
EX:
- "Call me whenever you have the time."
- "Whenever it rains, I feel gloomy."
CONCLUSION:
So, for those who have the habit of saying things like 'Whenever I was younger, I used to play outside every day.', remember that this is a grammatically wrong sentence! While used casually and in informal settings, especially by Americans, it is not to be used in writing or any type of formal and official situation.
Also, it just sounds off :pppp.
That's all. It's something that irks me so much.
I can't believe that my first blog post is a literal 'Ermmmm, actually 🤓☝️.' kind of post.
Have a great day everyone! <3
