Welcome back to Renviews (Ren Reviews)!

April 6, 2025: A Minecraft Movie (2025) !

Renviews won't assign numerical ratings to media or individual parts of it. I'm just here to get my thoughts out about something I enjoyed! (Or otherwise.) Spoilers abound!

Oh wow. Ohhh wow. That sure was an experience.

I went into the movie with little to no expectations aside from the assumption that it would be another abysmal botched video game adaptation. But, oddly enough, it ended up being decently self-aware over its absurdity and didn't take itself too seriously. Don't get me wrong, it was still technically a "bad" film in the sense that there were no stakes, the plot was jumbled, and it was an absurd mess. Even so, does that make it inherently a bad film? Sometimes movies that do not fall into those general pitfalls are still regarded as mediocre or forgettable by a large audience.

So then, how did I feel about it?

I'll admit that it was such shlock that I genuinely enjoyed it. Fun is fun, right?

Admittedly, a good amount of my enjoyment stemmed from the experience of watching it in a full theater. I personally love experiencing media with other people and adore seeing audience reactions.

Some highlights:

  • The handful of chuckles when Jack Black said "flint and steel"
  • A torch being a literal 1 in. x 1 in. x 2 ft. block of wood with a small flame on top
  • The burst of laughter when a villager was hit by a car
  • Jack Black saying, "First we mine, then we craft. We Minecraft." (Surprisingly no significant laughter over this one)
  • A fight between a powered-up iron golem and a Piglin choreographed like a kaiju battle
  • Clapping when the movie ended as if we had just watched a grand play
  • A Piglin general named General... Chungus...
  • Piglins turning into porkchops when killed
  • The awful way that the diamond armor looked on Steve
  • And much more...
And my favorite moment:

  • The entire theater erupting into applause when Jack Black said "chicken jockey"
That sounds like a fake Tumblr "and then everyone clapped" story, but I'm being so serious about it. I think this is the best theater experience I have ever had. Life can be so good sometimes.

I hope you enjoyed this inane rambling about a cheesy video game movie adaptation I watched! I... wouldn't exactly say that I recommend watching it, but if you find yourself in the mood for something goofy, maybe catch it whenever it's on some streaming service. However, I think this is something best experienced with others.
