And I honest to god believe that things have gotten both better since and worse since
We've achieved so much- housing was getting more available to black people than ever, education was getting more and more in our control thanks to affirmative action, protest action got questions about the police going, and cultural awareness helped ensure that our struggle was known
and then, so quickly, we were taken down again
the pillars were knocked, the achievements threatened, people silenced
we have returned to a moment as volatile as the one that ended up costing the reverend doctor martin luther king jr his life all the way back in april 1968
Racism is up, war is up, injustice is up and poverty is up- we can't find homes, we can't afford food, and the money is struggling
The difference between then and now is back then, we were a bit more lost
Now, we've found each other and we're willing to fight for each other a hell of a lot more
Let's each try to become more like King, to act in his example
So that maybe, just maybe, the dream he thought about won't die or be taken in vain
Recognizing his death, let's make the type of better world he imagined
It is we who are like him and Malcolm X and Medgar Evers and Fred Hampton and Jesse Jackson
We must fight for ourselves, in this and many other examples
To be free
Let us go together for our world, in peace, for our sakes
To help justify his death and make more worthy the efforts of his life
God bless you, Martin- we'll keep on fighting for you and all of us
