i didn't expect this to be good, i saw an artist named Autistic Boys Money Clan and i went hehehe. but it honestly is pretty solid. the vocals are subpar but the beats are decent enough and the imperfections add charm

roughly once a month i think to myself, "i really oughta listen to more jazz," the difference this time being that i decided to act on that thought. i've found that the best way to find jazz albums to listen to is to pick one based purely on the aura. does the cover exude an aura that appeals to you? then you have to listen to it. gato barbieri is the definition of aura. i felt almost spiritually drawn to this guy. i'm telling you it's a winning strategy because has it let me down? no. i don't know enough about the technicalities of jazz to get into that but what i can say is that it's fire

i don't think it's fair to compare the two eras of bcnr (comparison is the thief of joy or whatever) but it's a little difficult not to because the anguish was kinda my favorite part. i wasn't crazy about Live at Bush Hall, it worried me for the future of the band. undeniably talented musicians, but they couldn't seem to find where they wanted to go. Besties was good, but it just wasn't bcnr to me, and yet again i was worried. i avoided the other singles to preserve my own peace of mind. i still don't think Besties is anything special, but now i'm just confused why it was the lead single because Happy Birthday and For the Cold Country are incredible. in fact, most of this album is. the first four songs range from good to pretty good, and each one gets better than the last. and then Two Horses drops like a nuclear bomb and it just doesn't slow down from there. the rest of this album is truly spectacular (other than the title track, which is...there), bcnr have finally found where they want to be

i love all of the various "-kei" genres and i love this combination with picopop, these songs are quite frankly adorable. my only real complaint is that a few of them kinda drag on for longer than they need to but it's not like agonizing so i don't care that much

baby's first jane remover album. i haven't been intentionally avoiding her, i don't think, the time has just never felt right idk. but with the surprise drop of Revengeseekerz i felt the time was finally right and wow. digicore isn't exactly my thing so i don't see myself returning to this very often but this really is just such an experience. it's abrasive and unapologetic, it's relentless in its it's almost getting Imaginal Disk level praise on rym which tbh i think is deserved. my thing about albums like this is that it's just... a lot. and overwhelming. and this album is definitely a lot. Psychoboost is maybe my soty so far, with danny brown adding some interesting contrast cutting through the noise compared to jane's vocals that tend to get lost in the mix (though, that's by design).

seems to be relatively disappointing for fans, i've never listened to this band before so i can't speak in terms of that. but what i can say is that it's just overwhelmingly average and boring. it sounds like an attempt at trying to be brutal as hell but it just comes off as annoying. don't zone out for more than 10 seconds or else you'll lose track of what song you're on. if you really like metalcore then maybe give it a shot

fairly vanilla, i suppose, but this album is absolutely beautifully put together. Humanhood is pleasant and warm and comforting, definitely a cloudy day kind of album. the grooves are there, the hooks are there, the big thing for me is that some songs are either actually too long or they feel like they're too long even though they're only like three and a half minutes. the general consensus seems to be that you either think it's frontloaded or backloaded and i'm not sure which side i'm on yet.

is it dated? absolutely. but is it also funky as hell? absolutely. at the time this was incredibly innovative and cutting edge, synthpop was basically still in the womb at this point. while it doesn't really come off that way to a modern listener, the fact is that music doesn't exist as we know it without yellow magic orchestra. this album would make them so huge that michael jackson would end up covering Behind the Mask. it's not actually video game music, but i couldn't help but feel like i was in an arcade filled with classic games.

singer-songwriter | blues rock
★★★★
i've run out of things to say about the jazz/blues albums so thank god this is the last one. Heartattack and Vine contains some of his best and most average at this point. and it's also the perfect transitional piece between eras - here, waits finally swaps the more sentimental heartache lyricism for the much more abstract kind of style most probably know him for. i'm not a big fan of the slower moments, but Jersey Girl and Mr. Siegal are truly something special.

i've probably listened to this before but i don't remember. my favorite tom waits album (or one of), in which he drops the sinatra act and fully embraces the experimental side of himself and it pays off beautifully. if you're familiar with tom waits but not an active fan, this is the style you're probably familiar with. the jazz influences are still there, notably in In the Neighborhood, which takes on a new orleans style, but there's also songs like Underground that sound like a disney villain theme song, or perhaps his most blues rock song yet in Gin Soaked Boy. there's also instrumental tracks peppered throughout, which usually i'm not a big fan of, but they don't break the flow and, more importantly, they're short - and so they end up providing a nice breather. this album is pure genius
