4/4/25: suckerpunch (5/10)

So, I've been going on a bit of a film/tv binge recently.

I’m one of those media enthusiasts who gets the best experience when I know absolutely nothing about what I’m watching beforehand, and if I do find myself needing to do research into what I just saw to get a better understanding of the content, I find it even more enjoyable with some sort of prerequisite. This is all to say, for the 100th time in one of these blogs- I knew absolutely nothing about this movie before deciding to watch it. I mean, I didn't even know ZACK SNYDER was the director here! well- I mean- before the movie started, that is.

I don’t wanna start this off with the vibe that I’m a zack snyder hate or dick rider okay- cuz honestly, I don’t have much of an opinion on the guy. Well, I have an opinion, but it’s not as passionate as my opinion about someone like Michael Bay or Quinten Tarantino. I just think he makes what I call ‘’junk food’ films, basically movies that do to the viewer what a bag of doritos does to me after I smoke a blunt. The plots to these films can range from vague to barely strung together to completely nonsensical, but these films usually aren’t focused on getting you engaged in the plot itself. These films are purely watched for vibes and vibes alone, you’re there for the action- the badass women- the insane set pieces! and when I say insane I mean fucking INSANE SET PIECES. Like, This is the kinda film you know is bad for you, like a big ass piece of chocolate cake, but you’ve just gotta eat it.

I should probably talk about the movie now. So, without spoiling anything major, a basic summary of the plot is the main character. who’s named Babydoll(for some reason), is sent to a mental institution by her step father after an incident happened between the two that led to her younger sister being fatally shot. To cope (?) with the situation (or i guess maybe her brain is making her look at the world around her for what she perceives it as and not what it really is?), Babydoll imagines that the institution is actually a brothel, and the patients (who are all women) are actually sex workers who are being sold/forced to work for the doctors.

The movie kinda restarts after a point to reintroduce us to this new reality Babydoll imagines, so instead of her stepfather forcing her into the institution, he becomes a priest from the orphanage Babydoll aged out of (she’s 18) who brought her to the brothel to be sold (?). At the brothel, Babydoll meets Amber, Blondie, Sweet pea, and Rocket. With the girls, Babydoll plans to escape the brothel by collecting various items. For every plan to get each item Babydoll is basically used as a distraction, her dancing apparently being so beautiful, so intense, so emotional, so erotic that it completely warps the perception of everyone around her- even herself! This is when the movie fucking shines.

So, instead of showing us this super sexy dance, every time Babydoll performs- she envisions herself and the girls as badass female merc’s in hyper violent psycho sexual pseudo fantasy war realms fighting evil demonic enemies and shit!! And I mean, these girls are *seriously* FIGHTING. And while you can honestly feel the 300 vibes radiating from this film the most during the action scenes- they are undoubtedly the best scenes in the film and whenever one ends you just want whatever’s happening to end so you can get to the next scene!! Honestly, out of all the settings, my absolute favorite (when it comes to the action and the look) was the ww1 inspired one (though it honestly looked like they were mixing a lot of ww1 nazi tech/gear with ww2 so it could’ve been an even mixture of the two). The fights here were also just so good, with all the girls having their own unique styles and attitudes that really made them feel like a badass team of coldblooded soldiers.

Now…..on that note… I guess I should get technical here and start talking about the actual issues with the film. For one, the main actress's acting direction was just terrible. I honestly don’t know what she was going for, but I don’t blame her, because it wasn’t necessarily that she was a bad actress- I just don’t think Zack knew what he wanted her character to be, and as a result her performance really fumbled. It was a lot of hot and cold, action and inaction. Perhaps her character was meant to portray the idea of silence and passiveness being your greatest strength but Idk man, it was just weird, and Babydoll’s character was truly at her best when she was kicking ass.

As for the other girls, I’ve gotta say Rocket is my favorite. She’s definitely the most determined and daring of the group- which often leads to her getting over zealous, but her sister Sweet pea (despite being overbearing) is a good anchor for her character and you can really understand where she’s coming from despite how annoying she can kinda be.

The other two girls are honestly kinda one note and forgettable, which sucks because I still really liked them- I just don’t have much to say about them. Oscar Isaac was a big ass surprise tho! I really wasn’t expecting him to be in a film like this, and I definitely didn’t expect his role to be as big as it was, but he really impressed me, and I really liked his performance! He was a very menacing villain and was delightfully disgusting (though, his acting was kinda stunted here and there).

I really don’t want to spoil the ending for anyone interested in enjoying this disasterpiece, cuz although you kinda expect it- it’s still a pretty fun twist. All in all, this movie isn’t gonna be for everyone! Like, if you’re interested in films with all the fundamentals, like good writing, and substance along with cool action and badass set dressing, that’s completely understandable and I wouldn’t suggest you spend 2 hours (YES 2 HOURS) watching this messy film, but if you’re okay with sitting through the kinks just for a cool fucking experience? This is the film for you.

That’s all folks!
