game review queue, day 2: spongebob's atlantis squarepantis! ▶︎ •၊၊||၊|။||||။‌‌‌‌‌၊|• 2:06

hi! if you saw my bulletin post where i reviewed yoshi’s story, you’ll know that i was sticking to bulletin’s but this one was so long that i just felt like it had to be a blog post. it looks like i'll be doing that from now on. this one is gonna be a little more in depth for reasons i’ll explain. i played this title after breakfast in order to make up for yesterday (and yes i woke up before 4am lol.)

today’s pick was spongebob’s atlantis squarepantis for the playstation 2! from an era where console games were starting to get handheld ports, this one crossed over between both the game boy advance & the nintendo ds, which is funny bc at the time it could play gba games but coming out in 2007 closer to the gba’s end of life than not, & the backwards compatibility was cut from the ds lite less than a year before, it makes more sense.

it resonates a lot with me because my brother owned the dsi version & it held some charm, but the console versions are always better, of course. neither of them i played all the way through but today it was due to time. the dsi version contained 3d elements with a side-scrolling platformer like its competitor nsmb. the console version is WORLDS AWAY, so far.

review:

i was only able to get through the first two levels but it has the traditional 3d cutscenes that you see in every game, but sticks to the story & the dialogue in game isn’t too repetitive (ahem, truth or square.) you start out as plankton & that’s where the combat elements tank. no pun intended. you shoot down structures mostly but you have to shoot down a fence guarded by other small tanks as well. it was short but sweet as an introduction. once you reach the cave, that’s where it differentiates. it’s more obstacle/contraption based if anything. sometimes you’re throwing your teammate across & spongebob even has an ability where you use your joystick to flip the spatula which tickled me a bit.

i can’t give this too proper of a rating as i didn’t really make it through too much, but i’ll fare it on the same level as yoshi’s story giving it a 7/10. it’s probably potentially one of the better spongebob titles you’ll find for console. if you’re a fan of the movie & you have a ps2 or are an emulator like me, i recommend if you need a kick in the nostalgia.
